Frequency beamforming of dolphin whistles using a sparse three-element towed array.

چکیده
Acoustic bearings are obtained from dolphin whistles using frequency-domain ~FD! beamforming techniques on signals recorded on a three-element 9-m aperture towed array. Due to the wide element separation, the high-frequency ~kHz range! signals generate numerous grating lobes, but these lobes shift bearing with beamformed frequency, allowing identification of the true bearing whenever the whistles have over 1 kHz bandwidth. This method was validated by matching a sighting of a compact group of dolphins with acoustic bearing estimates. The system was subsequently used to detect and determine bearings from animals at least 3 km away and in Beaufort 51 conditions. Frequency-domain beamforming has advantages over temporal cross correlation when the signals are faint and/or overlapping. © 2000 Acoustical Society of America. @S0001-4966~00!00405-7#

Source levels and harmonic content of whistles in white-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris).
Recordings of white-beaked dolphin whistles were made in Faxafl6i Bay (Iceland) using a three-hydrophone towed linear array. Signals from the hydrophones were routed through an amplifier to a lunch box computer on board the boat and digitized using a sample rate of 125 kHz per channel. Using this method more than 5000 whistles were recorded. All recordings were made in sea states 0-1 (Beaufort ...
متن کاملDolphins Adjust Species-Specific Frequency Parameters to Compensate for Increasing Background Noise
An increase in ocean noise levels could interfere with acoustic communication of marine mammals. In this study we explored the effects of anthropogenic and natural noise on the acoustic properties of a dolphin communication signal, the whistle. A towed array with four elements was used to record environmental background noise and whistles of short-beaked common-, Atlantic spotted- and striped-d...
متن کاملThe spatial context of free-ranging Hawaiian spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) producing acoustic signals.
To improve our understanding of how dolphins use acoustic signals in the wild, a three-hydrophone towed array was used to investigate the spatial occurrence of Hawaiian spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) relative to each other as they produced whistles, burst pulses, and echolocation clicks. Groups of approximately 30 to 60 animals were recorded while they traveled and socialized in nears...
متن کاملAutomated Passive Acoustic Tracking of Dolphins in Free-ranging Pods
Research in passive acoustic detection and localization of marine mammals has largely focused on isolated cases of single or few individuals. However, many marine mammals, such as dolphins, characteristically aggregate in large pods. In addition, dolphins vocalize frequently, emitting broadband clicks and frequency-modulated whistles, which, coupled with a large number of individuals, further c...
متن کاملDifferences in the whistle characteristics and repertoire of Bottlenose and Spinner Dolphins.
Several methods have been used to compare the whistles produced by dolphins. The two methods used in this study are: (1) a classification of whistle contours in six categories (i.e. constant frequency, upsweep, downsweep, concave, convex, and sine) and (2) the extraction of frequency and time parameters from each whistle contour. Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus whistles are described in t...
