Natural History of Syphilis
نویسنده
چکیده
Syphilis, a chronic and systemic sexually transmitted infection, is caused by the spirochaete Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. It has the nickname of great imitator in the history of medicine because of its diverse clinical manifestations that occur in different stages of the disease. Shortly after the discovery of causal relationship between syphilitic infection and Treponema pallidum by Schaudinn and Hoffmann with a modified Giemsa stain in 1905, researchers were trying to develop different methods to diagnose syphilis at various stages. Treponema pallidum cannot be cultured in vitro and it can only be demonstrated by specific laboratory stains or dark ground microscopy. Since the organism is not easily accessible in early stage of infection, serologic tests are still the main and essential tools in making the diagnosis of syphilis.

متن کاملSymptomatic relapse of neurologic syphilis after benzathine penicillin G therapy for primary or secondary syphilis in HIV-infected patients.
We describe 3 symptomatic cases of neurologic syphilis that occurred after the administration of the usual therapy for primary or secondary syphilis in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. We discuss the difficulty of diagnosing neurosyphilis, the need for lumbar puncture, and risk factors of relapse. Because HIV infection may alter the natural history and response of neurologi...
متن کاملSyphilis and HIV infection: an update.
The striking increase in the prevalence of concordant human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and syphilis observed by clinicians and public health officers over the past decade has renewed interest in the subject. Although the effect of HIV infection on the natural history of syphilis has been known for a long time, it was not until recently that several studies documented that syphilis m...
متن کاملSubacute Hypophysitis with Panhypopituitarism as First Presentation of HIV and Syphilis Coinfection
Infection by Treponema pallidum still represents a clinical challenge due to its various forms of presentation. HIV coinfection added diversity and changed the natural history of syphilis as a systemic infection. We present a rare case of subacute hypophysitis and panhypopituitarism due to an early active neurosyphilis in a previously unknown HIV coinfected patient.
متن کاملSyphilis and human experimentation from World War II to the present: a historical perspective and reflections on ethics.
Even after the Nuremberg code was published, research on syphilis often continued to fall far short of ethical standards. We review post-World War II research on this disease, focusing on the work carried out in Guatemala and Tuskegee. Over a thousand adults were deliberately inoculated with infectious material for syphilis, chancroid, and gonorrhea between 1946 and 1948 in Guatemala, and thous...
متن کاملObservations on syphilis in Addis Ababa. 2. Prevalence and natural history.
Sera from various groups were tested for syphilis by cardiolipin, fluorescent treponemal antibody-absorbed (FTA-ABS), and treponemal haemagglutination (TPHA) tests. The proportion of positive results, 12.7%, obtained from an unselected urban population suggested that the prevalence of the disease had declined since 1953. The probable explanation is the widespread use of penicillin. Late manifes...
