Descriptive Metaphysics, Natural Language Metaphysics, Sapir-whorf, and All That Stuff: Evidence from the Mass-count Distinction

چکیده
Strawson (1959) described ‘descriptive metaphysics’, Bach (1986a) described ‘natural language metaphysics’, Sapir (1929) and Whorf (1940a,b, 1941) describe, well, SapirWhorfianism. And there are other views concerning the relation between correct semantic analysis of linguistic phenomena and the “reality” that is supposed to be thereby described. I think some considerations from the analyses of the mass-count distinction can shed some light on that very dark topic.

The Physics and Metaphysics of Primitive Stuff
The paper sets out a primitive ontology of the natural world in terms of primitive stuff, that is, stuff that has as such no physical properties at all, but that is not a bare substratum either, being individuated by metrical relations. We focus on quantum physics and employ identity-based Bohmian mechanics to illustrate this view, but point out that it applies all over physics. Properties then...
متن کاملPsychology and Metaphysics from Maine De Biran to Bergson
Introduction What can psychology, understood as a study of the nature of mental phenomena, tell us about metaphysics, understood as an account of the nature of being and of the most general properties of the world? At a certain degree of generality this question is itself a metaphysical one: how can what we know about our own minds tell us something about the world? But the meaning of the quest...
متن کاملCount-mass Distinction in the Acquisition of English Articles by Persian Learners of English
Articles in general and definite articles in particular can create problems even long after all other aspects of English have been mastered. The present article investigated the learnability problems related to the acquisition of count-mass distinction of English nominals by Persian L2 learners. متن کاملThe Influence of Ibn Sìnå on Gadr ad-Dìn Qinawì and His Followers
This article is an investigation into the nature of the Sufi metaphysics of Gadr ad-Dìn Qinawì and his followers. In contrast to previous scholars, who have considered Qinawì to be dismissive of philosophy in a way similar to Ghazålì, the author shows that in fact philosophical metaphysics, and in particular the formulations of Ibn Sìnå, had a great impact on Qinawì and his followers in the sch...
متن کاملComplexity: Order contra Chaos
A concise commentary on observing and modeling complexity within the framework of dynamical systems, information, and computation theories. Deterministic chaos, randomness, order, predictability, uncertainty, and complexity are contrasted. The descriptive abstraction of state is seen to be a natural extension of the symbolization necessary for language and of the number concept. Philosophical c...
