The perception of coronals in Western Arrernte
نویسنده
چکیده
This study examined perception of multiple coronal places of articulation by native listeners of Western Arrernte. Three main findings emerged. 1) Coronal nasals and laterals are as perceptually robust as coronal stops. 2) Across manners of articulation, apical alveolars are less perceptually robust than other coronals. 3) Formant transitions from a preceding vowel are necessary to correctly identify apical alveolars and apical postalveolars. Acoustic analysis shows the importance of cues on the preceding vowel side for apical postalveolars, and on the following vowel side for laminal palatoalveolars. Laminals have statistically distinguishable cues on both sides of the segment. Apical alveolars are hardest to characterize acoustically, and may be perceived by default. Low perceptibility of apical alveolars may be a reason for low functional load of the apical contrast. Result 3 corroborates Steriade’s idea that contrasts “must be licensed by the presence of their cues.” [4]

A Preliminary Ultrasound Study of Nasal and Lateral Coronals in Arrernte
Ultrasound tongue image data are presented for two female speakers of the Central Australian language Arrernte, focusing on the nasal and lateral coronal consonants. These coronal places of articulation are: dental, alveolar, retroflex and palatal. It is shown that the tongue back is particularly far forward for the palatal consonant, and to a lesser extent also for the retroflex consonant. The...
متن کاملA Preliminary Epg Study of Stop Consonants in Arrernte
The Australian Aboriginal language Arrernte has four coronal consonants in the stop, nasal and lateral series. This paper presents EPG data for the four coronal stops of Arrernte in inter-vocalic context for one female speaker of the language. Results show comparatively little variability in the laminal articulations, and comparatively greater variability in the apical articulations. An interes...
متن کاملCentral vowels in Arrernte: metrical prominence and pitch accent
This paper presents duration and formant data for the central vowels /@/ (schwa) and /a/ in Arrernte, a central Australian language. Results show that /@/ has a shorter duration and higher position in the vowel space in metrically prominent syllables, whereas /a/ has a longer duration and no change in formant structure. By contrast, effects of pitch accent are minimal for both vowels.
