Invited review TMS and drugs

چکیده
The application of a single dose of a CNS active drug with a well-defined mode of action on a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator system may be used for testing pharmaco-physiological properties of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) measures of cortical excitability. Conversely, a physiologically well-defined single TMS measure of cortical excitability may be used as a biological marker of acute drug effects at the systems level of the cerebral cortex. An array of defined TMS measures may be used to study the pattern of effects of a drug with unknown or multiple modes of action. Acute drug effects may be rather different from chronic drug effects. These differences can also be studied by TMS measures. Finally, TMS or repetitive TMS by themselves may induce changes in endogenous neurotransmitters or neuromodulators. All these possible interactions are the focus of this in-depth review on TMS and drugs. q 2004 International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology. Published by Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Neuroscientist Ulf Ziemann Studying the Human Cortex Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation at the Interface with Other Techniques : A Powerful Tool for
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has developed into a very powerful tool in the hands of basic and clinical neuroscientists alike to study function and dysfunction of the human brain noninvasively and painlessly. However, as a stand-alone technique, the potential of TMS to gain knowledge is relatively limited. This potential can be strongly enhanced by combining TMS with simultaneous mea...

level, you may want to skip most of it until a a second, in-depth reading. (Everyone is invited to re-read it). "KO as a Use Case for TMs" reads much easier, since here the relationship between TMs and KO is worked out in more practical terms.

BACKGROUND A number of studies have applied transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to physiologically characterize Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to monitor effects of pharmacological agents, while others have begun to therapeutically use TMS and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to improve cognitive function in AD. These applications are still very early in development, but offer t...

gene expression (c-FOS) in the periventricular nucleus of the thalamus, dopamine release and changes in cortisol and prolactin levels. Studies of TMS in depression have yielded inconclusive results. A systematic review of approximately 15 randomized, placebo-controlled clinical studies involving around 200 patients reached the conclusion that there is currently insufficient evidence to suggest ...
متن کاملMechanical Properties of Irregular Fiber (Invited Review Paper)
Irregularities are inherent to virtually all fibers, including the conventional textile fibers, the high-performance brittle fibers and newly developed nano-fibers. These irregularities can fall into two main categories: dimensional or geometrical irregularity (external) and structural irregularity (internal). For natural fibers such as wool, diameter variation along fiber length is atypical ex...
