Multimodal Rendering of Walking over Virtual Grounds

چکیده
The addition of multimodal feedback during navigation in a virtual environment is fundamental when aiming at fully immersive and realistic simulations. Several visual, acoustic, haptic or vibrotactile perceptual cues can be generated when walking over a ground surface. Such sensory feedback can provide crucial and varied information regarding either the ground material itself, the properties of the ground surface such as slope or elasticity, the surrounding environment, the specificities of the footfloor interaction such as gait phase or forces, or even user’s emotions. This chapter addresses the multimodal rendering of walking over virtual ground surfaces, incorporating haptic, acoustic and graphic rendering to enable truly multimodal walking experiences.

A Novel Sound Localization Experiment for Mobile Audio Augmented Reality Applications
This paper describes a subjective experiment in progress to study human sound localization using mobile audio augmented reality systems. The experiment also serves to validate a new methodology for studying sound localization where the subject is outdoors and freely mobile, experiencing virtual sound objects corresponding to real visual objects. Subjects indicate the perceived location of a sta...
متن کاملConfigurable Design of Multimodal Non Visual Interfaces for 3D VE's
3D virtual environments (VE) require an advanced user interface to fully express their information contents. New I/O devices enable the use of multiple sensorial channels (vision, hearing, touch, etc.) to increase the naturalness and the efficiency of complex interactions. Haptic and acoustic interfaces extend the effective experience of virtual reality to visually impaired users. For these use...
متن کاملA multimodal architecture for simulating natural interactive walking in virtual environments
We describe a multimodal system that exploits the use of footwear-based interaction in virtual environments. We developed a pair of shoes enhanced with pressure sensors, actuators, and markers. These shoes control a multichannel surround sound system and drive a physically based audio-haptic synthesis engine that simulates the act of walking on different surfaces. We present the system in all i...

Virtual Reality technologies are increasingly used in numerous domains. In industrial applicationsfor instance, virtual prototyping enables engineers to interactively test if one part can be assembledinto another. In such simulations, the contact between virtual objects is an essential notion as ittightly governs the movement of objects, constraining their trajectory with respect to...
