Parfentjev, I. A. (Institute of Applied Biology, New York, N.Y.), and Anna R. Catelli. Tolerance of Staphylococcus aureus to sodium chloride. J. Bacteriol. 88:1-3. 1964.-The tolerance of Staphylococcus aureus to high concentrations of sodium chloride in liquid medium has been reported. We found that S. aureus grows at 37 C in Tryptose Phosphate Broth saturated with sodium chloride. No difference was noticed between possibly pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains. Under the conditions of our tests, no changes in the original properties of S. aureus strains occurred. In contrast, solutions of sodium chloride in distilled water were injurious to staphylococci and killed most of these organisms in 1 hr. Staphylococci were killed faster at 37 C than at room temperature in a solution of 0.85% sodium chloride in water. Addition of traces of Tryptose Phosphate Broth had a protective effect and prolonged the life of these organisms in physiological saline. All tests were performed at pH 7.2.

Habituation of enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus to Origanum vulgare L. essential oil does not induce direct-tolerance and cross-tolerance to salts and organic acids
Enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus strains that were isolated from foods were investigated for their ability to develop direct-tolerance and cross-tolerance to sodium chloride (NaCl), potassium chloride (KCl), lactic acid (LA) and acetic acid (AA) after habituation in sublethal amounts (1/2 of the minimum inhibitory concentration - 1/2 MIC and 1/4 of the minimum inhibitory concentration - 1/...
متن کاملOptimization condition in labeling of Ofloxacin with 99mTc and its biological evaluation in Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli for infection imaging
Introduction: The use of radiopharmaceuticals is a powerful tool in the management of patients with infectious or inflammatory diseases in nuclear medicine. In this study ofloxacin as a second-generation fluoroquinolone is used to design a desired infection imaging agent after labeling with 99mTc via direct labeling. Methods: Ofloxacin was radiolabeled with 99mTc using di...
متن کاملMechanism of action of Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil on Staphylococcus aureus determined by time-kill, lysis, leakage, and salt tolerance assays and electron microscopy.
The essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The mechanisms of action of tea tree oil and three of its components, 1,8-cineole, terpinen-4-ol, and alpha-terpineol, against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 9144 were investigated. Treatment with these agents at their MICs and two times their MICs, particularly treatment with terpinen-4-ol and alpha-t...
متن کاملSodium Chloride Salt Tolerance Evaluation and Classification of Spring Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)
Abiotic stresses such as salinity, are factors that severely affects agricultural production. To evaluate the effects of salinity on some morphological and physiological traits related to salt tolerance of 22 genotypes of spring rapeseed cultivars in the vegetative growth stage, an experiment was conducted as a split plot form based on Randomized Complete Blocks Design using levels of salinity:...
متن کاملAdaptational change in proline and water content of Staphylococcus aureus after alteration of environmental salt concentration.
Adaptation of Staphylococcus aureus to a change in salinity was studied by estimating the intracellular content of water and proline after alteration of the salt concentration of the culture medium. The intracellular water content of S. aureus cultured in normal broth was 1.70 g/g (dry weight). After transfer to 1.8 M NaCl-containing broth, the water content decreased to 0.80 g/g (dry weight) w...
