چکیده
We discuss our implementation of targeted pre-reading assignments with an associated online quiz in two science classes, one physics and one biology. Our goal was to create a pre-class assignment that helped students recognize the benefits of reading before class. Students were asked to take part in a survey about how and why they completed the pre-reading assignments. We found that 80% of students read the textbook on a regular basis, which is much higher than reported in previous studies. Also nearly 3/4 of students reported using productive strategies for completing the reading assignment and cited reading prior to class as being helpful to their learning. Student self-reports were checked against electronic logs and were found to be highly accurate. Moreover, these results were nearly identical between the physics and biology courses.VC 2014 American Association of Physics Teachers. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1119/1.4895008]

This section of AJP includes physics education research ~PER! articles. It continues the editorial process that begun with the green PER Supplementary Issues to AJP published in July of 1999–2001. The PER section ~PERS! is a response to the tension between the long-standing policy of AJP not to publish research articles and the growing interest within the AAPT community in PER. Articles in the ...
متن کاملReal-time Approaches in the Development of Formal Thinking in Physics
There is a widely acknowledged consensus, both in the educational research and in the school communities, about the very relevant role of Formal Thinking in building a well sound knowledge in Science Education, and expecially in Physics Education. A piece of evidence is the decision of having this Seminar and the many contributions presented. In school practice several learning difficulties are...

متن کاملIntegration of Physics and Biology: Synergistic Undergraduate Education for the 21st Century
This is an exciting time to be a biologist. The advances in our field and the many opportunities to expand our horizons through interaction with other disciplines are intellectually stimulating. This is as true for people tasked with helping the field move forward through support of research and education projects that serve the nation's needs as for those carrying out that research and educati...

متن کاملPhysics Education Research Section
Physics education researchers have compiled substantial evidence that student course outcomes can be improved if physics instructors incorporate research-based instructional strategies into their teaching. Some instructors find this evidence convincing and attempt to change their instruction. Some of these instructors are successful and some are not. This paper presents the results of a case st...
