چکیده

Vivian F. Irish Yale University, New Haven, CT. MADS box genes encode key transcriptional regulators that have been implicated in the control of various aspects of floral development, primarily through work carried out in Arabidopsis. We have embarked on a series of analyses to examine the extent to which gene duplication, regulatory diversification and differences in protein interactions have been important in modifying the roles of MADS box genes during the evolution of flowering plant species. As a first step, we have been developing strategies to rapidly identify all MADS box genes from a given species in order to carry out comprehensive phylogenetic and functional analyses. Using these data, we have initiated analyses of the roles of tomato MADS box genes in flower and fruit development. In addition, we have been developing methods to carry out functional analyses in non-model basal eudicot species. By combining in depth sampling of the repertoire of MADS box genes in phylogenetically informative species with functional analyses in a variety of systems, we can trace the evolutionary history of these genes and define their ancestral and derived roles. In addition, we can assess the extent to which developmental modules controlled by MADS box genes have been redeployed to give rise to new morphologies. Together, these approaches are paving the way for a greater understanding of how these genes have diversified to specify different aspects of floral architecture.

Molecular and phylogenetic analyses of the MADS-box gene family in tomato.

MIKCc-type MADS-box genes encode key transcriptional regulators of a variety of developmental processes in Arabidopsis thaliana. However, there has been relatively little effort to systematically carry out comparative genomic or functional analyses of these genes across flowering plants. Here we describe a strategy to identify members of the MIKCc-type MADS-box gene family from any angiosperm s...

Molecular Cloning and Analysis of Two Flowering Related Genes from Apple (Malus × domestica)

Apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.) is the fourth fruit in importance and Iran ranks fifth in apple production in the world. Longevity of juvenility in apple extends breeding cycles and makes its breeding a tough job. To alleviate this barrier via genetic engineering, the genes involved in flowering and floral development of apple and their function must be identified and characterized. Most of thes...

Molecular and phylogenetic analyses of the complete MADS-box transcription factor family in Arabidopsis: new openings to the MADS world.

MADS-box transcription factors are key regulators of several plant development processes. Analysis of the complete Arabidopsis genome sequence revealed 107 genes encoding MADS-box proteins, of which 84% are of unknown function. Here, we provide a complete overview of this family, describing the gene structure, gene expression, genome localization, protein motif organization, and phylogenetic re...

Antiquity and evolution of the MADS-box gene family controlling flower development in plants.

MADS-box genes in plants control various aspects of development and reproductive processes including flower formation. To obtain some insight into the roles of these genes in morphological evolution, we investigated the origin and diversification of floral MADS-box genes by conducting molecular evolutionary genetics analyses. Our results suggest that the most recent common ancestor of today's f...
