چکیده

Anopheles subgenus Nyssorhynchus is a monophyletic Neotropical group (Sallum et al. 2000, 2002) that currently contains 32 named species (Harbach 2004). The most important vectors of human malaria parasites in Central and South America are members of the subgenus and include An. darlingi Root, 1926, An. albimanus Wiedemann, 1820 and An. marajoara Galvão & Damasceno, 1942 (Conn et al. 2002). Anopheles marajoara belongs to a group of morphologically similar species, the Albitarsis Complex, which also contains An. albitarsis Lynch-Arribálzaga, 1878, An. deaneorum RosaFreitas, 1989 and An. albitarsis “B” of Wilkerson et al. (1995). The An. albitarsis Complex species are largely indistinguishable morphologically with nearly all characters in all stages either identical or overlapping. Anopheles albitarsis s. l. was suspected to contain more than one species by various authors based on epidemiological, behavioral, morphological, cytological, and biochemical evidences (Galvão and Damasceno 1944; Kreutzer et al. 1976; Linthicum 1988; Rosa-Freitas and Deane 1989; Rosa-Freitas et al. 1990; Narang et al. 1993). Wilkerson et al. (1995) using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR) demonstrated the existence of the above four species. Recently, Lehr et al. (2005) hypothesized a fifth Notes on the holotype of Anopheles marajoara Galvão & Damasceno (Diptera, Culicidae)

Identification of Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) marajoara (Diptera: Culicidae) in Bolivia Using Polymerase Chain Reaction and a Restriction Endonuclease

Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) marajoara Galvão & Damasceno (Diptera: Culicidae) is a memberof theAlbitarsis cryptic species complex and is aprimaryvectorofhumanPlasmodium inparts of Brazil. We report the Þrst record of An.marajoara in the department of Cochabamba and conÞrm its presence in the department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. We also describe a PCR protocol producing a single amplicon ( 340 bp) o...

Cryptic Species in the Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) albitarsis (Diptera: Culicidae) Complex: Incongruence Between Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA-Polymerase Chain Reaction Identification and Analysis of Mitochondrial DNA COI Gene Sequences.

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) diagnostic bands are one tool used to differentiate cryptic mosquito species in the Anopheles albitarsis Complex. Monophyly of four species (A. albitarsis Lynch-Arribálzaga, A. albitarsis B, A. deaneorum Rosa-Freitas, and A. marajoara Galvão & Damasceno) currently identified with the RAPD technique was assessed using sequences of the cytochrome oxidase I ...

Intron retention identiWes a malaria vector within the Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) albitaris complex (Diptera: Culicidae)

Taxonomic identiWcation of cryptic mosquito species is more than an academic exercise when members of the species complex function as human disease vectors. The correct identiWcation of species involved in disease transmission is vital for development of public health strategies and assessment of eVectiveness of previously implemented strategies (e.g., vaccination or vector control eVorts). Genetic structure of Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) marajoara (Diptera: Culicidae) in Colombia.

Five Anopheles marajoara Galvão and Damasceno populations, representing diverse ecological conditions, were sampled throughout Colombia and analyzed using nine hypervariable DNA microsatellite loci. The overall genetic diversity (H = 0.58) was lower than that determined for some Brazilian populations using the same markers. The Caquetá population (Colombia) had the lowest gene diversity (H = 0....

Ecological suitability and spatial distribution of five Anopheles species in Amazonian Brazil.

Seventy-six sites characterized in Amazonian Brazil revealed distinct habitat diversification by examining the environmental factors associated with the distribution and abundance of five anopheline species (Diptera: Culicidae) in the subgenus Nyssorhynchus. These included three members of the Albitarsis Complex, Anopheles oryzalimnetes, Anopheles marajoara, Anopheles janconnae; Anopheles trian...
