Fuelling controversy

چکیده
The US President’s annual State of the Union speech is a favorite place to unveil new initiatives. For the past several months there has been a buzz that President George W. Bush would say something dramatic about climate change. “Buzz” in Washington can mean political trial balloons, genuine leaks or simply wishful thinking. It took a while to sort out the truth in this case. The week before the speech, a columnist for the Washington Post thought he might have smoked out the secret. Carbon emissions trading, which the White House had long resisted, could be the January surprise. “A fantasy, you say? On Saturday I put the case for a carbon tax or a cap-and-trade system to James Connaughton, the head of the Council on Environmental Quality at the White House. Far from denouncing these policies as ecosocialist nonsense, Connaughton sounded open to them. ‘In concept I can agree with you,’ he said.” But the Post soon reported that White House spokesman Tony Snow “slapped that down” at the next regular press briefing. The Boston Globe tried another bold prediction the day before the speech, noting that, “many in Congress and the energy industry expect it to include raising fuel-economy standards for automobiles, more support for renewable energy sources, and efforts to control emissions at utility plants and other big polluters.” That turned out to be somewhat closer to the truth. When Mr. Bush finally took the podium in front of Congress, he did call for improved fuel-efficiency standards for cars and more reliance on alternative fuels. However, power plants and industry, which generate Mediawatch: Richard F. Harris looks at the response to climate change issues raised in President Bush’s State of the Union address last month. Gas-phase deprotonation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid investigated by IR spectroscopy: solution-phase structure is retained upon ESI.
The gas-phase structure of the conjugate base of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (and related compounds) and the influence of the solvent used in its generation by electrospray ionization have recently been under debate. While the phenoxide structure is known to be lower in energy in the gas phase, the carboxylate structure is favored in aqueous solution, fuelling the controversy. Here we probe the struc...
متن کاملLocation Ordination for LNG Fuelling Station in the Persian Gulf Ports of Iran Using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)
Usage of the new and alternative clean fuel is becoming a hot topic in marine transportation in accordance with environmental regulations of I.M.O. Using L.N.G as the ship fuel is a reliable and long term solution for environmental issues. Iran owing to its large number of natural gas fields and unique geographical position, has adequate potential to provide services to shipping fleets. Finding...
متن کاملDoes migratory distance affect fuelling in a medium-distance passerine migrant?: results from direct and step-wise simulated magnetic displacements
In birds, fat accumulation before and during migration has been shown to be endogenously controlled and tuned by, among other factors, the Earth's magnetic field. However, our knowledge about the influence of the geomagnetic field on the fuelling in migrating birds is still limited to just a few nocturnally migrating passerine species. In order to study if variations of the magnetic field can a...
متن کاملDual-Fuelling of a Direct-Injection Automotive Diesel Engine by Diesel-Gas Method
Use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in compression-ignition (C-I) engines has always been considered important in the diesel engineering field. This is due to its easy accessibility and good combustion characteristics. In this paper the application of LPG fuel along with diesel oil in a direct- injection automotive diesel engine is experimentally investigated. In order to convert the pure dies...
متن کاملFuelling decisions in migratory birds: geomagnetic cues override the seasonal effect.
Recent evaluations of both temporal and spatial precision in bird migration have called for external cues in addition to the inherited programme defining the migratory journey in terms of direction, distance and fuelling behaviour along the route. We used juvenile European robins (Erithacus rubecula) to study whether geomagnetic cues affect fuel deposition in a medium-distance migrant by simula...
