A New Genus, Hesperocyparis, for the Cypresses of the Western Hemisphere (cupressaceae)

چکیده
Phylogenetic comparisons of three nuclear DNA gene regions (nrDNA(ITS), 4-coumarate: CoA ligase, abscisic acid-insensitive 3) and a chloroplast region (petN-psbM) show that the Western Hemisphere cypresses (Hesperocyparis) is a well-supported clade quite separated from the Eastern Hemisphere cypresses (Cupressus). Based on these new data and previous data, a new genus, Hesperocyparis, is erected for the Western Hemisphere species previously placed in the genus Cupressus (sensu lato). Hesperocyparis is most closely related to the northwestern North American Callitropsis nootkatensis and the southeast Asian Xanthocyparis vietnamensis. Morphological characters distinguishing Hesperocyparis from C. nootkatensis and X. vietnamensis, and from the Eastern Hemisphere cypresses (Cupressus), are presented. Phytologia 91(1):160-185 (April, 2009).

Over the past 70 years a destructive blight of Cupressus macrocarpa and other Cupressaceae, caused by Seiridium cardinale, has spread worldwide from California, devastating forests, plantations, and ornamental cypresses. The epidemic has been particularly severe in the Mediterranean region, on C. sempervirens. A similar destructive blight induced by Lepteutypa cupressi, which caused serious los...
متن کاملExploring the Formation of a Disjunctive Pattern between Eastern Asia and North America Based on Fossil Evidence from Thuja (Cupressaceae)
Thuja, a genus of Cupressaceae comprising five extant species, presently occurs in both East Asia (3 species) and North America (2 species) and has a long fossil record from Paleocene to Pleistocene in the Northern Hemisphere. Two distinct hypotheses have been proposed to account for the origin and present distribution of this genus. Here we recognize and describe T. sutchuenensis Franch., a ne...
متن کاملHistorical biogeography of the genus Chamaecyparis (Cupressaceae, Coniferales) based on its fossil record
The megafossil record of Chamaecyparis (Cupressaceae) in the Northern Hemisphere, especially that in Europe, is reviewed with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the biogeographic history of this genus and providing an explanation of the causes of eastern Asian and western and eastern North American intercontinental disjunction of extant members. The fossil data available favor the hyp...
متن کاملA molecular re-examination of phylogenetic relationships among Juniperus, Cupressus, and the Hesperocyparis-Callitropsis-Xanthocyparis clades of Cupressaceae
Previous molecular phylogenetic studies have recovered conflicting hypotheses of relationship among Juniperus (J), Cupressus (C), and Hesperocyparis-Callitropsis-Xanthocyparis (HCX). Conflict between nuclear genes, chloroplast genes, and nuclear and chloroplast data have all been realized in recovering all possible topologies among the three clades. In this study, we use 2.2 kb of aligned seque...

The genus Juniperus (Cupressaceae) consists of approximately GO species distributed in the orthern Hemisphere, except for J.yrocera Hocll. which extends into the Southern Hemisphere in Africa (Florin, 1963). The delimitation of the species of Juniperus is difficult in all of the world; few taxonomic studies have encompassed any large geographical or natural province. Gaussen (1968) lists 99 spe...
