چکیده

Human observers can quickly and accurately interpret the meaning of complex visual scenes. The neural mechanisms underlying this ability are largely unexplored. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure cortical activity while subjects identified briefly-presented scenes as either specific familiar locations ("Houston Hall"), general place categories ("kitchen"), or general situational categories ("party"). Sceneresponsive voxels in the parahippocampal place area (PPA) and retrosplenial cortex (RSC) were highly sensitive to recognition level when identifying scenes, responding more strongly during location identification than during place category or situation identification. In contrast, the superior temporal sulcus, cingulate sulcus, and supermarginal gyrus displayed the opposite pattern, responding more strongly during place category and situtation identification. Consideration of results from four experiments suggest that the PPA represents the visuospatial structure of individual scenes, while RSC supports processes that allow scenes to be localized within a larger extended environment. These results suggest that different scene identification tasks tap distinct cortical networks. In particular, we hypothesize that the PPA and RSC are critically involved in the identification of specific locations but play a less central role in other scene recognition tasks.

An automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is a popular topic in the field of image processing and is considered from different aspects, since early 90s. There are many challenges in this field, including; fast moving vehicles, different viewing angles and different distances from camera, complex and unpredictable backgrounds, poor quality images, existence of multiple plates in the scene, va...

Analyzing Scenes in a Neural Network Model of Schema-Based Vision

A novel approach to object recognition and scene analysis based on neural network representation of visual schemas is described. Given an input scene, the VISOR system focuses attention successively at each component, and the schema representations cooperate and compete to match the inputs. The schema hierarchy is learned from examples through unsupervised adaptation and reinforcement learning....

Where am I now? Distinct roles for parahippocampal and retrosplenial cortices in place recognition.

A key component of spatial navigation is the ability to use visual information to ascertain where one is located and how one is oriented in the world. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the neural correlates of this phenomenon in humans. Subjects were scanned while retrieving different kinds of topographical and nontopographical information in response to visual scenes. In...

Familiarity and Scene Processing Visual Scene Processing in Familiar and Unfamiliar Environments Familiarity and Scene Processing Familiarity and Scene Processing

Humans and animals use information obtained from the local visual scene to orient themselves in the wider world. Although neural systems involved in scene perception have been identified, the extent to which processing in these systems is affected by previous experience is unclear. We addressed this issue by scanning subjects with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they viewed p...
