چکیده

The dependability of technological systems is a growing social concern. Increasingly computer based systems are developed that carry the potential of increasing catastrophic consequences from single accidents. There have been significant research advances in assessment methods. However dependability assessment of computer systems in practice is still a very uncertain and often adhoc procedure. Decision making about system dependability is an uncertain affair and must account of failures in expertise and be capable of integrating different sources of evidence. A more meaningful way of reasoning about systems dependability can be achieved by rejecting current ad-hoc dependability assessment methods and replacing them with the idea of dependability argumentation. Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN’s) is proposed as the most promising technology to support this kind of dependability argumentation.

Formalising Engineering Judgement on Software Dependability via Belief Networks

We present the use of Bayesian belief networks to formalise reasoning about software dependability, so as to make assessments easier to build and to check. Bayesian belief networks include a graphical representation of the structure of a complex argument, and a sound calculus for representing probabilistic information and updating it with new observations. We illustrate the method and show its ...

Project Portfolio Risk Response Selection Using Bayesian Belief Networks

Risk identification, impact assessment, and response planning constitute three building blocks of project risk management. Correspondingly, three types of interactions could be envisioned between risks, between impacts of several risks on a portfolio component, and between several responses. While the interdependency of risks is a well-recognized issue, the other two types of interactions remai...

Assesing dependability of safety critical systems using diverse evidence

A primary objective of the DATUM (Dependability Assessment of safety critical systems Through the Unification of Measurable evidence) project was to improve the way dependability of software intensive safety-critical systems was assessed. Our hypothesis was that improvements were possible if we could incorporate multiple types of evidence. To achieve our objective we had to investigate how to g...

The Application of Bayesian Belief Networks to Assurance Case Preparation

Designers of dependable systems need to present assurance cases that support the claims made about the system’s dependability. Building this assurance case, incorporating different types of evidence and reasoning, can be daunting. In this paper we argue that, thanks to their flexibility and expressive capabilities, Bayesian Belief Networks are particularly suitable for building such assurance c...

A Surface Water Evaporation Estimation Model Using Bayesian Belief Networks with an Application to the Persian Gulf

Evaporation phenomena is a effective climate component on water resources management and has special importance in agriculture. In this paper, Bayesian belief networks (BBNs) as a non-linear modeling technique provide an evaporation estimation  method under uncertainty. As a case study, we estimated the surface water evaporation of the Persian Gulf and worked with a dataset of observations ...
