چکیده

We investigate the effectiveness of link-protection schemes in terms of their ability to handle node failures in all-optical networks. We focus on node recovery, using a ring-based scheme (double-cycle cover; DCC) and generalized loopback. Comparisons are made by introduction of metrics that measure a protection scheme’s effectiveness in handling node failures. We also introduce measures that quantify failure impact, the degree to which a network is left vulnerable to a failure after a previous failure has been successfully recovered. Comparison with DCC for five sample networks shows that generalized loopback is more robust against node failures and can provide the same level of reliability while using 16% less capacity on average over five sample networks. c © 2002 Optical Society of America

High-speed All- Optical Time Division Multiplexed Node

In future high-speed self-routing photonic networks based on all-optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) it is highly desirable to carry out packet switching, clock recovery and demultplexing in the optical domain in order to avoid the bottleneck due to the optoelectronics conversion. In this paper we propose a self-routing OTDM node structure composed of an all-optical router and demultiplex...

Fault Tolerance in Optical Networks; A study of electronic in- and egress interconnections in Torus topologies

The ingress and egress nodes in an all-optical network have an electronic inand egress part and an optical switch. This work analyses various architectures for interconnection of the "electronic" and "optical" parts of the network in order to tolerate single optical switch failures and single optical link failures. The architectures studied are: non-redundant (reference), fault tolerant optical...

Probabilistic location-free addressing in wireless networks

Multi-hop wireless networks, such as sensor, ad hoc and mesh networks, suffer from permanent topology dynamics due to unstable wireless links and node mobility. Stable addressing, as needed for reliable routing, in such evolving, challenging network conditions is thus a difficult task. Efficient multihop wireless communication in these networks then requires a fully decentralized, scalable rout...

Predicting Deficient Condition Performance of Water Distribution Networks

A water distribution network is subjected to various abnormal conditions such as pipe breaks, pump failures, excessive demands etc. in the design period. Under such conditions, the network may not be able to meet required demands at desired pressures, and becomes deficient. Traditional network analysis assumes nodal demands to be satisfied and available nodal pressures are calculated. However, ...

Evaluating Multipath TCP Resilience against Link Failures

Standard TCP is the de facto reliable transfer protocol for the Internet. It is designed to establish a reliable connection using only a single network interface. However, standard TCP with single interfacing performs poorly due to intermittent node connectivity. This requires the re-establishment of connections as the IP addresses change. Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) has emerged to utilize multiple ...
