A Sharp Upper Bound for the First Dirichlet Eigenvalue and the Growth of the Isoperimetric Constant of Convex Domains

We show that as the ratio between the first Dirichlet eigenvalues of a convex domain and of the ball with the same volume becomes large, the same must happen to the corresponding ratio of isoperimetric constants. The proof is based on the generalization to arbitrary dimensions of Pólya and Szegö’s 1951 upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on planar star-shaped domains which depends on the support function of the domain. As a by-product, we also obtain a sharp upper bound for the spectral gap of convex domains.

Eigenvalues of the Laplacian acting on functions of mean zero with constant boundary values
We investigate the eigenvalues of the Laplace operator in the space of functions of mean zero and having a constant (unprescribed) boundary value. The first eigenvalue of such problem lies between the first two eigenvalues of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions and satisfies an isoperimetric inequality: in the class of open bounded sets of prescribed measure, it becomes minimal for...
متن کاملSome Isoperimetric Comparison Theorems for Convex Bodies in Riemannian Manifolds
We prove that the isoperimetric profile of a convex domain Ω with compact closure in a Riemannian manifold (M, g) satisfies a second order differential inequality which only depends on the dimension of the manifold and on a lower bound on the Ricci curvature of Ω. Regularity properties of the profile and topological consequences on isoperimetric regions arise naturally from this differential po...
متن کاملPayne - Weinberger eigenvalue estimate for wedge domains on spheres ∗
A Faber-Krahn type argument gives a sharp lower estimate for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for subdomains of wedge domains in spheres, generalizing the inequality for the plane, found by Payne and Weinberger. An application is an alternative proof to the finiteness of a Brownian motion capture time estimate. Many lower estimates for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a domain stem from an inequ...

In this paper we give sharp upper bounds on the Zagreb indices and characterize all trees achieving equality in these bounds. Also, we give lower bound on first Zagreb coindex of trees.

Let $\Omega_X$ be a bounded, circular and strictly convex domain in a complex Banach space $X$, and $\mathcal{H}(\Omega_X)$ be the space of all holomorphic functions from $\Omega_X$ to $\mathbb{C}$. The growth space $\mathcal{A}^\nu(\Omega_X)$ consists of all $f\in\mathcal{H}(\Omega_X)$ such that $$|f(x)|\leqslant C \nu(r_{\Omega_X}(x)),\quad x\in \Omega_X,$$ for some constant $C>0$...
