Fat embolism syndrome, in a patient with Bilateral total knee replacement

چکیده
BACKGROUND: Fat embolism syndrome is caused by the release of fat globules into the systemic circulation. The presentation varies from mild respiratory distress to a devastating clinical scenario that includes hypoxemia, petechial hemorrhages of the skin, and confusion that may lead to coma or death. It is prevalent in 1-5% of patients after trauma to the pelvis, long bones and rarely described in elective total knee replacement. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a case of fat embolism syndrome after elective bilateral total knee replacement with cerebral and pulmonary involvement, showing typical imaging findings in brain magnetic resonance imaging and pulmonary computed tomography. CONCLUSION: Fat embolism syndrome is a rare complication of bilateral total knee replacement.

Cerebral fat embolism after bilateral total knee replacement arthroplasty -A case report-
Fat embolism syndrome is a rare and potentially lethal complication most commonly seen in long bone fractures and intramedullary manipulation. The clinical triad of fat embolism syndrome consists of mental confusion, respiratory distress, and petechiae. This study reports a case of cerebral fat embolism syndrome following elective bilateral total knee replacement. After an uneventful anesthesia...
متن کاملPulmonary and Cerebral Fat Embolism Syndrome After Total Knee Replacement
Fat embolism occurs after long bone fracture or orthopedic surgery and usually shows mild symptom. But it rarely results in fat embolism syndrome, presenting as multiorgan dysfunction such as lung, brain and skin. Although the diagnosis of fat embolism syndrome is mostly based on clinical features, we experienced fat embolism syndrome involving lung and brain, showing typical imaging findings i...
متن کاملEfficacy of Corticosteroids in Prevention of Fat Embolism Syndrome in Patients with Long Bone Fracture
Fat embolism syndrome refers to a constellation of symptoms secondary to the presence of fat globules in the lung parenchyma and/or peripheral blood circulation. The syndrome is most often seen in association with long bone or pelvic fractures and can cause significant morbidity and mortality. The present randomized double blind placebo-controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of...
متن کاملMotor Aphasia as a Rare Presentation of Fat Embolism Syndrome; A Case Report
Fat embolism syndrome is a clinical diagnosis, and diagnostic procedures are not specific. In every trauma patient, Fat embolism syndrome has to be considered as a possibility and supportive treatment should begin as soon as possible. The authors reported a rare case of Fat embolism syndrome whose only neurological symptom was motor aphasia. A young man sustained comminuted femoral shaft frac...

One hundred consecutive, primary simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasties were prospectively compared with 100 consecutive, primary unilateral total knee arthroplasties in reference to relative risk, complications, cost, and need for rehabilitation. All procedures were performed using identical preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative protocols. Postoperative confusion was approx...
