چکیده

In this paper, numerical solutions to the equations for the Ericksen-Leslie dynamic theory are obtained for two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal flows subject to a magnetic field. A numerical method for solving the governing equations for 2D flows has been formulated. The governing equations are solved by a finite difference technique based on the GENSMAC methodology introduced by Tomé and McKee (1994), Tomé et al. (2002). To demonstrate the capabilities of the numerical method the flow of a nematic liquid crystal in a planar 1:4 expansion was simulated. Calculations were simulated for various values of the Ericksen number (the ratio of viscous to elastic stress).

Director Structures in a Chiral Nematic Slab: Threshold Field and Pitch Variations

Abstract The liquid crystal director distribution is determined for a confined chiral nematic slab. The molecular director distribution of the field-controlled chiral nematic slab is directly calculated. The director profiles for the tilt and the twist angles, under different applied fields, are calculated in the slab with weak boundary conditions. Then, the dependence of the threshold field on...

سمت‌گیری مولکول‌های بلور مایع نماتیک در وضعیت دو بعدی و اثر چنگ زدگی‌های متناهی و نامتناهی

In this paper, the director distribution is calculated for a nematic liquid crystal, in the cell with different surface anchoring conditions and external fields. The effects of finite and infinite surface anchoring on molecular orientations for one dimensional geometry are discussed. In these situations, the planar alignment is considered. Then, in a two dimensional geometry the planar and homo...

Homogeneous Biaxial Patterns and Director Instabilities of Liquid Crystal Polymers in Imposed Elongational Flows

We analyze the elongational-ow-driven Doi nematodynamic equations for spatially homogeneous nematic liquid crystal polymers (LCP). Following original studies by See, Doi and Larson 25], Bhave et al. 1], and Rey 23], the following results are provided: The order parameter (2-D) analysis of 23] is generalized to the full ve-component orientation tensor, revealing new, elongation-induced, director...

Numerical Investigation of Two-dimensional Flows of Nematic Liquid Crystals

We present a numerical method for solving two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal flows subject to a magnetic field. The dynamic equations of nematic liquid crystals are based on the Ericksen-Leslie dynamic theory. This theory accounts for fluid anisotropy and elastic stresses resulting from spatial distortion of the “director”, which is a vector field describing the local average molecular orie...

Nonhomogenous patterns with core defects in elongational flows of liquid crystal polymers

The interaction between flow and orientation of liquid crystalline polymers ~LCPs! creates remarkable heterogeneous patterns in which defects, or singular solutions, serve to mediate a confluence of ordered nematic phases. The origin of defects remains a mystery. It is therefore valuable to have models for LCP flows that provide some evidence of defects, and of the corresponding physical compet...
