چکیده

Angular momentum loss (AML) mechanisms and dynamical evolution owing to magnetic braking and gravitational radiation in relativistic binary stars (RBS) are studied with use of physical parameters collected from the literature. We have calculated and compared AML time scales for the RBS with non-degenerate components and double degenerate (DD) systems. c Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence.

Structure and evolution of low-mass W UMa type systems – II. with angular momentum loss

In a preceding paper, using Eggleton’s evolution code we have discussed the structure and evolution of low-mass W UMa type contact binaries without angular momentum loss (AML). The models exhibit cyclic behavior about a state of marginal contact on a thermal time-scale. Part of the time of each cycle is spent in contact and part in a semi-detached state. According to observations, W UMa systems...

Cataclysmic Variable Primary Effective Temperatures: Constraints on Binary Angular Momentum Loss

We review the most decisive currently available measurements of the surface effective temperatures, Teff, of white dwarf (WD) primaries in cataclysmic variables (CVs) during accretion quiescence, and use these as a diagnostic for their time averaged accretion rate, 〈Ṁ〉. Using time-dependent calculations of the WD envelope, we investigate the sensitivity of the quiescent Teff to long term variat...

R-Mode Oscillations and Spindown of Young Rotating Magnetic Neutron Stars

Recent work has shown that a young, rapidly rotating neutron star loses angular momentum to gravitational waves generated by unstable r-mode oscillations. We study the spin evolution of a young, magnetic neutron star including both the effects of gravitational radiation and magnetic braking (modeled as magnetic dipole radiation). Our phenomenological description of nonlinear r-modes is similar ...

Spirals shocks have been widely studied in the context of galactic dynamics and protostellar discs. They may however also play an important role in some classes of close binary stars, and more particularly in cataclysmic variables. In this paper, we review the physics of spirals waves in accretion discs, present the results of numerical simulations and consider whether theory can be reconcilied...

Magnetic Braking Revisited

We present a description for the angular momentum loss rate due to magnetic braking for late type stars taking into account recent observational data on the relationship between stellar activity and rotation. The analysis is based on an idealized two component coronal model subject to constraints imposed on the variation of the coronal gas density with rotation period inferred from the observed...
