چکیده

When exploring a virtual environment using a point interaction type force feedback interface, users are forced to adopt a method of ‘temporal encoding’ in order to classify textured surfaces, due to the lack of spatially distributed cues on the fingerpad. Dynamic modelling of haptic interfaces suggests that high spatial frequency information may be attenuated, such that discrimination of stimuli by human users is restricted by the performance of the device. Subjects were asked to judge the orientation of virtual gratings, using a conventional PHANToM interface and one augmented with a dedicated high frequency actuated end-effector. A significant increase in discrimination performance was found for the higher bandwidth interface.

Optical pulse compression based on nonlinear silicon waveguides and chirped Bragg gratings

Due to the growing demand for higher bandwidth, employing optical devices instead of electronic devices in data transmission systems has attracted much attention in recent years. Optical switches, modulators and wavelength converters are a few examples of the required optical devices. CMOS compatible fabrication of these devices, leads to much more growing of this technology. Optical pulse comp...

Influence of Visual Feedback on Passive Tactile Perception of Speed and Spacing of Rotating Gratings

We studied the influence of visual feedback on the tactual perception of both speed and spatial period of a rotating texture. Participants were placed in a situation of perceptual conflict concerning the rotation speed of a cylindrical texture. Participants touched a cylindrical texture of gratings rotating around its axis at a constant speed, while they watched a cylinder without gratings rota...

Neural bandwidth of veridical perception across the visual field

Neural undersampling of the retinal image limits the range of spatial frequencies that can be represented veridically by the array of retinal ganglion cells conveying visual information from eye to brain. Our goal was to demarcate the neural bandwidth and local anisotropy of veridical perception, unencumbered by optical imperfections of the eye, and to test competing hypotheses that might accou...

Effects of Time Delay on Depth Perception via Head-Motion Parallax in Virtual Environment Systems

Experiments were conducted to determine how the ability to detect and discriminate head-motion parallax depth cues is degraded by time delays between head movement and image update. The stimuli consisted of random-dot patterns that were programmed to appear as one cycle of a sinusoidal grating when the subject’s head moved. The results show that time delay between head movement and image update...
