چکیده

The majority of all biologically caused taste-and-odor outbreaks in drinking water characterized worldwide are caused by microbial production of ( )-geosmin [( )-(4S,4aS,8aR)-4,8adimethyloctahydronaphthalen-4a-ol] and ( )-2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) {(1R-exo)-1,2,7,7-tetramethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ol}. Since they were first identified in the early 1960s, these two earthy-muddy-smelling metabolites have been the focus of considerable research, which has collectively produced over 400 scientific articles, reports, websites, and conference proceedings. Yet despite this substantial body of knowledge, geosmin and 2-MIB remain poorly understood throughout much of the water industry, and misconceptions which impede the prediction, treatment, and control of these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) persist. This paper reviews salient aspects of our current knowledge on the sources and properties of geosmin and 2-MIB which are essential to understanding and managing drinking water malodors. In particular, we highlight some key factors regulating the storage and release of these compounds by cells. These important factors are often overlooked and may contribute to some of the apparent ambiguity of many taste-and-odor outbreaks.

Gender Differences in Electroencephalographic Activity in Response to the Earthy Odorants Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol

Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol, molecules with the same odor characteristics, are mainly responsible for the smell of soil and cause odor problems worldwide in drinking water supplies. However, the effect of these odor molecules on human brain function is still unclear. The present investigation aimed to evaluate the effect of inhalation of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol on human electroencepha...

Comparison of analytical techniques for detection of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol in aqueous samples.

Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol are secondary metabolites expressed by a variety of organisms that are responsible for off-flavors in public water supplies, aquaculture, and a host of other important products. Hence, there is continuing research into the causes for their expression and methods to mitigate it, which require sensitive and accurate detection methods. In recent years, several new te...

Purge-and-Trap Extraction of Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol from Soil

Although a number of techniques are available for estimating the biomass of filamentous microorganisms in soil, determination of their activity is much more difficult. We report on preliminary studies evaluating the potential use of the volatile microbial secondary metabolites geosmin and methylisoborneol as indicators of activity of filamentous microorganisms. The purge-and-trap technique for ...

Geographical and Seasonal Patterns of Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol in Environmental Water in Jiangsu Province of China

This study was conducted to obtain the basic data of two common odorants-geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (GSM and 2-MIB)-in environmental water. More specifically, the headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) was applied to determine the levels of GSM and 2-MIB in water samples, and the samples were collected depending on water sources...

The determination of six taste and odour compounds in water using Ambersorb 572 and high resolution mass spectrometry.

A method for the analysis of six taste and odour causing compounds in aqueous samples using the granular adsorbent, Ambersorb 572, and gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS) has been developed. This method for the determination of geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine (IPMP), 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine (IBMP), 2,3,6-trichloroanisole (236-TC...
