چکیده

Recent microscopic and phenomenological calculations of giant dipole resonances for A ≤ 56 nuclei are presented. The derived photodisintegration cross sections are exhaustively compared to the photonuclear data available to date. An accurate description of the data is found. Our new calculations are also compared with the previous and widely-used estimates of Puget, Stecker and Bredekamp. The present calculations also include all the possible paths down the nuclear chart. The impact on the photodisintegration of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) is illustrated for a Fe source with typical energies of 10eV. At energies around 10eV, the new cross sections are found to modify the UHECR photodisintegration rates. At energies around 10eV, it is recommended to solve a full reaction network to estimate the photodisintegration rate of the UHECR.

The Photodisintegration of Cosmic Ray Nuclei by Solar Photons: the Gerasimova-zatsepin Effect Revisited

The interesting possibility of measuring the masses of high energy cosmic ray particles by observing pairs of extensive air showers arriving at the earth nearly simultaneously was proposed some years ago by Gerasimova and Zatsepin (1960). Such showers would be created by the nuclear fragments originating as a result of the photodisintegration of massive nuclei interacting with the solar radiati...

It is shown that an instanton induced interaction between quarks produces a very deeply bound H-dibaryon with mass below 2M N , M H = 1718 MeV. Therefore the H-dibaryon is predicted to be a stable particle. The reaction of photodisintegration of H-dibaryon to 2Λ in during of its penetration into cosmic microwave background will result in a new possible cutoff in the cosmic-ray spectrum. This pr...

Helium photodisintegration and nucleosynthesis: Implications for topological defects, high energy cosmic rays, and massive black holes.

We consider the production of He and H by He photodisintegration initiated by nonthermal energy releases during early cosmic epochs. We find that this process cannot be the predominant source of primordial H since it would result in anomalously high He/D ratios in conflict with standard chemical evolution assumptions. We apply this fact to constrain topological defect models of highest energy c...

Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Nuclei from Individual Magnetized Sources

We investigate the dependence of composition, spectrum and angular distributions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays above 10 eV from individual sources on their magnetization. We find that, especially for sources within a few megaparsecs from the observer, observable spectra and composition are severely modified if the source is surrounded by fields of ∼ 10 G on scales of a few megaparsecs. Low e...
