Morphology of the Nuclear Disk in M87

چکیده
A deep, fuly sampled diffraction limited (FWHM ∼ 70 mas) narrowband image of the central region in M87 was obtained with the Wide Filed and Planetary Camera 2 of the Hubble Space Telescope using the dithering technique. The Hα+[N ii] continuum subtracted image reveals a wealth of details in the gaseous disk structure described earlier by Ford et al. (1994). The disk morphology is dominated by a well defined three-arm spiral pattern. In addition, the major spiral arms contain a large number of small “arclets” covering a range of sizes (0 .1–0 .3 = 10–30 pc). The overall surface brightness profile inside a radius ∼ 1. 5 (100 pc) is well represented by a power-law I(μ) ∼ μ, but when the central ∼ 40 pc are excluded it can be equally well fit by an exponential disk. The major axis position angle remains constant at about PAdisk ∼ 6 ◦ for the innermost ∼ 1, implying the disk is oriented nearly perpendicular to the synchrotron jet (PAjet ∼ 291 ). At larger radial distances the isophotes twist, reflecting the gas distribution in the filaments connecting to the disk outskirts. The ellipticity within the same radial range is e = 0.2 − 0.4, which implies an inclination angle of i ∼ 35. The sense of rotation combined with the dust obscuration pattern indicate that the spiral arms

The disk in the center of M87 is a prototype for gas orbiting a massive central object. Three sets of HST+COSTAR FOS and FOC observations provide strong evidence that the nuclear disk in M87 is in Keplerian rotation around a black hole with a mass of (2 − 3) × 10 9 M⊙. A deep (6 orbits), high resolution Hα+[N ii] PC2 HST image shows a trailing, three arm spiral superposed on the underlying nucl...

Background and Aims :The most frequent cause of TMJ dysfunction is internal derangement which that largely involves the function of the articular disc. Anterior disc displacement (ADD) is one of the major findings in TMJ internal derangement. Since the importance of knowledge of its etiology and also The role of all structural indicators association with TMD was not evaluated, in this researc...
متن کاملJet-Driven Disk Accretion in Low Luminosity AGN?
We explore an accretion model for low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) that attributes the low radiative output to a low mass accretion rate, Ṁa, rather than a low radiative efficiency. In this model, electrons are assumed to drain energy from the ions as a result of collisionless plasma microinstabilities. Consequently, the accreting gas collapses to form a geometrically thin disk at small radii and is ...

The morphology of the X–ray and radio emitting features in the central ∼ 50 kpc region around the galaxy M87 strongly suggests that buoyant bubbles of cosmic rays (inflated by an earlier nuclear active phase of the galaxy) rise through the cooling gas at roughly half the sound speed. In the absence of strong surface tension, initially spherical bubbles will transform into tori as they rise thro...
