VERITAS Observations of Magnetars
نویسنده
چکیده
Magnetars are rotating neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields (∼ 10−10G). Xray and soft gamma-ray observations have revealed the existence of non-thermal particle populations which may suggest emission of very high energy photons. VERITAS, an array of four 12m imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, is designed to observe gamma-ray emission between 100 GeV and 30 TeV. Here we present the results of VERITAS observations of two magnetars, 4U 0142+61 and 1E 2259+586.

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Observations of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 in Spring 2006 with VERITAS
VERITAS, the Very Energetic Radiation Telescope Imaging Array System, is an array of four imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in southern Arizona. It is sensitive to gamma rays at energies above 100GeV. Here, we discuss the results of observations of two well known VHE blazars, Markarian 421 and Markarian 501, during Spring 2006 which were made with the first two telescopes during the comi...
متن کاملVeritas: Status and Performance
VERITAS is an atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array sited in Tucson, Ari-zona. The array is nearing completion and consists of four, 12 m diameter telescopes. The first telescope in the array has been operating since February 2005, while observations with the full array are expected to begin in January, 2007. We report here in some detail on the performance of the first VERITAS telescope, and b...
متن کاملVERITAS Observations of the Arrival Directions of the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays
The recent discovery by the Pierre Auger collaboration of anisotropy in the arrival directions of the highest energy cosmic rays, correlated with the positions of nearby active galactic nuclei [1, 2], encourages the search for counterpart TeV gammaray emission. Approximately half of the sky viewed by the southern hemisphere Pierre Auger experiment is also visible at reasonable elevations for th...
متن کاملVERITAS Blazar Observations - Recent Results
We present the discovery of very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object 1ES 0806+524 (z=0.138) and the intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lac object W Comae (z=0.102) with VERITAS. VHE emission was discovered from these objects during the 2007/2008 observing campaign, with a strong outburst from W Comae detected in mid-March, lasting a few days. Quasi-si...
متن کاملThe VERITAS Blazar Key Science Project
The VERITAS array of 12-m atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes in southern Arizona is currently the world’s most-sensitive detector of astrophysical very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) γ-rays. Approximately 25 blazars are known to emit VHE photons, and observations of blazars are one of the VERITAS collaboration’s key science projects (KSP). More than 50 of these objects have been observed with the a...
