چکیده

The use of student subjects and the role of deception in economic experiments are two controversial issues that have been widely discussed in the agricultural and resource economics (ARE) community recently. We provide a self-contained methodological discussion of these issues from the perspective of the larger experimental economics community. Our main points are that field professionals are most appropriate for policy-oriented and measurement questions, and student subjects are most effective at answering scientific research questions closely tied to economic theory. Active deception, where subjects are provided with explicitly misleading information, has been avoided in the mainstream economics discipline because it can lead to a loss of experimental control, lead to subject selection bias, and impose negative externalities on other researchers. Disciplinary ARE journals may want to abide by these norms to maintain credibility, but interdisciplinary ARE journals may have more flexibility though it is important to provide guidelines to avoid too much reviewer-specific variation in standards. For ARE researchers, we suggest employing a deception-free experimental design whenever possible because we know of no field in which deception is encouraged. Investigating Agricultural Productivity Growth and Convergence in Iran and Eastern African Countries

The issue of convergence or divergence of productivity has important policy for regional poverty reduction and increasing standards of living. If productivity converges to a common level without intervention, there is little need for explicit policies in lagging regions to promote catch up. On the other hand, productivity has divergence trend, then explicit policies would be needed to prevent f...

The Method of Experimental Economics

There are many similarities between experimental economics and psychological research, both substantive and methodological. However, there are important differences as well. Within each topic ...

What Constitutes a Field Experiment in Economics?

Experimental economists are leaving the reservation. They are recruiting subjects in the field rather than in the classroom, using field goods rather than induced valuations, and using field context rather than abstract terminology in instructions. We argue that there is something methodologically fundamental behind this trend. Field experiments differ from laboratory experiments in many ways. ...

Experimental economics and deception: A comment

At a recent conference at which we were participants (the 1996 Amsterdam Workshop on Experimental Economics) one recurrent theme at a number of sessions was the issue of deception in economics experiments. Not withstanding some heated exchanges, it seemed clear that the predominant view among the participants was that deception in an experiment should be avoided. In the present paper Bonetti ch...
