چکیده

We compute the angular power spectrum of temperature anisotropies on the microwave sky in the cosmic texture theory, with standard recombination assumed. The spectrum shows`Doppler' peaks analogous to those in scenarios based on primordial adiabatic uctuations such as`standard CDM', but at quite diierent angular scales. There appear to be excellent prospects for using this as a discriminant between innationary and cosmic defect theories. The cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy is the cleanest probe we have of structure formation in the universe, providing our best hope for deenitively connrming or excluding theories of the origin of structure. The COBE observation 1] provided the rst solid evidence of anisotropy, but due to its limited angular resolution it provided little more than an overall normalisation and rough evidence of scale invariance. Higher resolution experiments ooer the far richer prospect of a detailed measurement of the angular power spectrum and statistical properties of the anisotropies, which will give very powerful constraints on theories. Existing theories of the origin of structure fall into two categories, based upon either the ampliication of quantum uctuations in a scalar eld during innation or upon the process 1

The Doppler peaks from a generic defect

We investigate which of the exotic Doppler peak features found for textures and cosmic strings are generic novelties pertaining to defects. We find that the “out of phase” texture signature is an accident. Generic defects, when they generate a secondary peak structure similar to inflation, apply to it an additive shift. It is not necessary for this shift to be “out of phase”. We also show which...

N ov 1 99 6 Can Doppler Peaks discriminate among Inflationary models and Topological Defect scenarios ?

Doppler peaks in the cosmic microwave background may allow us to distinguish among the two classes of theories—inflationary models and topological defect scenarios—which attempt to explain the origin of structure formation in the universe. We consider density perturbations seeded by global textures in a universe dominated by cold dark matter. We calculate the height and the position of the prim...

The Observability of Secondary Doppler Peaks

By proposing a statistic for the detection of secondary (Doppler) peaks in the CMBR power spectrum, the significance level at which such peaks may be detected are computed for a large range of model CMBR experiments. In particular, we investigate experimental design features required to distinguish between competing cosmological theories, such as cosmic strings and inflation, by establishing wh...

Structure of Doppler peaks induced by active perturbations.

We investigate how the qualitative structure of Doppler peaks in the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave anisotropy is affected by basic assumptions going into theories of structure formation. We define the concepts of “coherent” and “incoherent” fluctuations, and also of “active” and “passive” fluctuations. In these terms inflationary fluctuations are passive and coherent while topo...

Doppler peaks from active perturbations.

We examine how the qualitative structure of the Doppler peaks in the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave anisotropy depends on the fundamental nature of the perturbations which produced them. The formalism of Hu and Sugiyama is extended to treat models with cosmic defects. We discuss how perturbations can be \active" or \passive" and \incoherent" or \coherent", and show how causality...
