چکیده

A nonlinear optical processor that is capable of real-time conversion of a femtosecond pulse sequence into its spatial image is introduced, analyzed, and experimentally characterized. The method employs nonlinear spectral domain three-wave mixing in a crystal of LiB3O5, where spectral decomposition waves of a shaped femtosecond pulse are mixed with those of a transform-limited pulse to generate a quasi-monochromatic second-harmonic field. By means of this nonlinear process, the temporal-frequency content of the shaped pulse is directly encoded onto the spatial-frequency content of the second-harmonic field, producing a spatial image of the temporal shaped pulse. We show that, unlike the commonly used autocorrelator, such time-tospace conversion carries both amplitude and phase information on the shape of the femtosecond pulses. © 1997 Optical Society of America [S0740-3232(97)01705-5]

Femtosecond pulse shaping using spatial light modulators

We review the field of femtosecond pulse shaping, in which Fourier synthesis methods are used to generate nearly arbitrarily shaped ultrafast optical wave forms according to user specification. An emphasis is placed on programmable pulse shaping methods based on the use of spatial light modulators. After outlining the fundamental principles of pulse shaping, we then present a detailed discussio...

Ultrafast time-domain spectroscopy based on high-speed asynchronous optical sampling.

High-speed asynchronous optical sampling (ASOPS) is a novel technique for ultrafast time-domain spectroscopy (TDS). It employs two mode-locked femtosecond oscillators operating at a fixed repetition frequency difference as sources of pump and probe pulses. We present a system where the 1 GHz pulse repetition frequencies of two Ti:sapphire oscillators are linked at an offset of Deltaf(R)=10 kHz....

Influence of Interface Thermal Resistance on Relaxation Dynamics of Metal-Dielectric Nanocomposite Materials under Ultrafast Pulse Laser Excitation

Nanocomposite materials, including noble metal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric host medium, are interesting because of their optical properties linked to surface plasmon resonance phenomena. For studding of nonlinear optical properties and/or energy transfer process, these materials may be excited by ultrashort pulse laser with a temporal width varying from some femtoseconds to some hund...

Ultrafast scientific lasers expand on their legacy

While ultrafast (picosecond and femtosecond) lasers are an essential subset of the lasers used today in industry and the medical arena (for example, machining glass for smartphone screens for the former, and laser eye surgery for the latter), it is the use of ultrafast lasers in research that allows such lasers to show their true colors, sometimes literally. Indeed, science is where it all bega...

Photon gating in four-dimensional ultrafast electron microscopy.

Ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM) is a pivotal tool for imaging of nanoscale structural dynamics with subparticle resolution on the time scale of atomic motion. Photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM), a key UEM technique, involves the detection of electrons that have gained energy from a femtosecond optical pulse via photon-electron coupling on nanostructures. PINEM has been ap...
