Linear-nonlinear models of the red-green chromatic pathway.

چکیده
The mean hue of flickering waveforms comprising only the first two harmonics depends on their temporal alignment. We evaluate explanatory models of this hue-shift effect using previous data obtained using L- and M-cone-isolating stimuli together with chromatic sensitivity and hue discrimination data. The key questions concerned what type of nonlinearity produced the hue shifts, and where the nonlinearities lay with respect to the early band-pass and late low-pass temporal filters in the chromatic pathways. We developed two plausible models: (a) a slew-rate limited nonlinearity that follows both early and late filters, and (b) a half-wave rectifying nonlinearity-consistent with the splitting of the visual input into ON- and OFF-channels-that lies between the early and late filters followed by a compressive nonlinearity that lies after the late filter.

A yellow/blue equilibrium Iight is one which appears neither yellowish nor bluish (i.e. uniquely red, uniquely green, or achromatic). The spectral locus of the monochromatic greenish equilibrium (around 500 nm) shows little, if any, variation over a luminance range of .! log,, units. Reddish equilibria are extraspectral. involving mixtures of short-and long-wave light. Their wavelength composit...
متن کاملAbsence of a chromatic linear motion mechanism in human vision
We have investigated motion mechanisms in central and perifoveal vision using two-frame random Gabor kinematograms with isoluminant red-green or luminance stimuli. In keeping with previous results, we find that performance dominated by a linear motion mechanism is obtained using high densities of micropatterns and small temporal intervals between frames, while nonlinear performance is found wit...
متن کاملTemporal analysis of the topographic ERG: Chromatic versus achromatic stimulation
The topographic electroretinogram evoked by multi-focal exchange of black and white or red and green stimuli was analysed into linear and non-linear Wiener kernels. The first-order (temporally linear) response showed a biphasic waveform which inverted as the luminance ratio of the exchanged colours passed through unity (established both psychophysically and photometrically). A short latency non...
متن کاملLuminance mechanisms mediate the motion of red–green isoluminant gratings: the role of “temporal chromatic aberration”
In this paper we use a dynamic noise-masking paradigm to explore the nature of the mechanisms mediating the motion perception of drifting isoluminant red-green gratings. We compare contrast thresholds for the detection and direction discrimination of drifting gratings (1.5 cpd), over a range of temporal frequencies (0.5-9 Hz) in the presence of variable luminance or chromatic noise. In the firs...
متن کاملAbsence of Linear Subthreshold summation between Red-Green and Luminance Mechanisms over a Wide Range of Spatio-temporal Conditions
We have tested the independence of red-green chromatic and luminance mechanisms at detection threshold using a method of subthreshold summation. Stimuli were isoluminant red-green gratings and yellow-black luminance gratings that uniquely activate the red-green color and luminance mechanisms, respectively. Stimuli were Gaussian enveloped 0.25, 1 or 4 cpd sinewave gratings, counter-phase flicker...
