Towards sustainable controls of pasture pests: Progress on control ofArgentine

چکیده
Pastures in the northern North Island contain a complexofnationallydistributedinsectsandinsects associated with warmer climatic conditions. Argentine stem weevil (Listronotus bonariensis (Kuschel)) is the most important insect pest in New Zealand. Progress toward the development of sustainable control of Argentine stem weevil is basedon a thorough understanding of the population ecologyofthepest.ThepopulationsizeofArgentine stem weevildependsonthenumberofAcremonium lolii-freeryegrass tillersin thesward. Identification of A. lolii-free ryegrasses that are tolerant/resistant to Argentine stem weevil may improve ryegrass production and persistence without endangering animal health. The release of a South American parasite and the utilisation of naturally occurring pathogenic fungi together with tolerant/resistant ryegrasses has the potential to provide long term sustainable control of Argentine stem weevil in p a s t u r e s .

A multitude of insects and mites attack fruit crops throughout the tropics. The traditional method for controlling most of these pests is the application of chemical pesticides. Growing concern on the negative environmental effects has encouraged the development of alternatives. Inundatively and inoculatively applied microbial control agents (virus, bacteria, fungi, and entomopathogenic nematod...
متن کاملMonitoring Frameworks for Universal Health Coverage: What About High-Income Countries?
Implementing universal health coverage (UHC) is widely perceived to be central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and is a work program priority of the World Health Organization (WHO). Much has already been written about how low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) can monitor progress towards UHC, with various UHC monitoring frameworks available in the literature. However, ...
متن کاملUtilization of biopesticides as sustainable solutions for management of pests in legume crops: achievements and prospects
Grain legumes remain important to meet the projected targets relating to food and nutritional security worldwide. The complementation of cereal-based food with grain legumes is a vegetarian diet with high-quality protein. However, the performance of these crops is severely influenced by a number of biotic and abiotic stresses, of which pests and pathogens remain the crucial affecting plants at ...
متن کاملPastures, Pests and Productivity: Simple Grazing Models with Two Herbivores
Simple grazing models with two herbivores are used to assess the effects of pasture pests on stability and productivity of continously-growing pastures. Algebraic and graphical methods are also presented for estimating losses from pasture pests at different stocking rates directly, from data on productivity/stocking rate relationships. Pests are considered as competing grazing herbivores and de...
