The sharpening of microtome knives.
نویسنده
چکیده
The regular production of a satisfactory edge on a microtome knife for the cutting of sections as thin as 2 u, which are free from scores and other blemishes, is a serious technical problem in histological laboratories. Eyen when a good edge is produced on a knife, its life is generally limited because contact with any hard material in the specimen may damage the delicate edge, causing it to score subsequent sections.

متن کاملA microtome knife guard.
The base sledge microtome presents a hazard to the operator due to the length of blade that is exposed. Manipulation of the carriage requires hand movements close to the knife edge and serious lacerations may result. A simple, effective guard has been devised, suitable for knives which have screw holes for handles at both ends. It consists of two perspex end-pieces (Fig. I), attached to the kni...
متن کاملA Diamond Knife Holder for Microtomes Designed to Take Glass Knives
Diamond knives for cutting thin sections for electron microscopy were first introduced by Ferngndez-Mor~n (1) and have been perfected subsequently by him (2). Such knives, as distributed, are embedded by means of a special alloy in a rectangular metal mounting which usually measures 11 x 4.5 x 1.5 mm. (2). A holder for the metal mounting, complete with collecting trough, has been described (2),...
متن کاملField necropsy of cattle and diagnostic sample submission.
Field necropsies can provide a wealth of information that can help guide production management decisions. Techniques outlined can allow a veterinary practitioner to complete a thorough necropsy of a bovine, including examination of the brain when indicated, in less than 20 minutes. An observation and history collection system using form templates and photographs is outlined that improves effici...
متن کاملNerve-myoepithelium and Nerve-glandular Epithelium Contacts in the Lacrimal Gland of the Sheep
Electron microscope studies of several types of secretory glands (6, 17, 18) have shown that myoepithelial cells envelop the acini and resemble smooth muscle cells in their fine structure (15). No close nerve-myoepithelium contacts with a separation of less than 0.1 /i have been described, and it has been suggested, for example in the rat submaxillary gland, that activation of the myoepithelium...
