Religious Beliefs, Religious Participation and Cooperation

چکیده
The paper analyzes the relation between religious beliefs, religious participation and social cooperation. In particular, we focus on religions that instill beliefs about the connection between rewards and punishments and social behaviour. We show how religious organizations arise endogenously, analyze their e¤ect on social interactions in society and identify a "spiritual" as well as a "material" payo¤ for being religious. We show that religious groups that are more demanding in their rituals are smaller, more cohesive, and are composed of individuals whose beliefs are more "extreme". We use our framework to analyze the response of individual beliefs and religious membership to correlated shocks in society, such as natural disasters or periods of prosperity. This heterogeneity of beliefs allows for the endogenous emergence of religious institutions; ...
متن کاملWhat are atheists for? Hypotheses on the functions of non-belief in the evolution of religion
An explosion of recent research suggests that religious beliefs and behaviors are universal, arise from deep-seated cognitive mechanisms, and were favored by natural selection over human evolutionary history. However, if a propensity towards religious beliefs is a fundamental characteristic of human brains (as both by-product theorists and adaptationists agree), and/or an important ingredient o...

متن کاملReligion and Intragroup Cooperation: Preliminary Results of a Comparative Analysis of Utopian Communities
Several authors have argued that religious beliefs are a way of communicating commitment and loyalty to other group members. The advantage of commitment signals is that they can promote intragroup cooperation by overcoming the free-rider problems that plague most cooperative pursuits. In this article, the author tests this idea using a database on 19th century utopian communes. The economic suc...
