Can ecologists heat up the discussion on invasive species risk?

چکیده
Ecologists predict that invasive species and global climate change will be two of the leading drivers of global biodiversity loss over the next century (Sala et al., 2000). Society, however, has responded to these two threats in a very uneven way; global climate change has become a major focus of public policy, while problems from invasive species remain poorly addressed. This discrepancy is emphasized by the Kyoto Protocol, which brought 160 nations together in 1997 to create a program for worldwide reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the fact that ecologists have recognized invasive species as a serious problem since the 1950s (Elton, 1958), there has been no international effort comparable to the Kyoto Protocol to reduce their impacts. This discrepancy is also reflected at the national scale—this fiscal year the United States will spend close to $2 billion on climate change research (CCSP, 2004), while only $227 million is budgeted for invasive species research (NISC, 2005). In this editorial, we ask why ecologists have had so little success communicating the problems of invasive species to society, and offer some suggestions for how ecologists can be more effective at this in the future. Communicating the risks from invasive species is complicated. Each invasive species has different impacts, and there are many diverse vectors of introduction. In our experience, members of the general public are aware of a few specific examples of invasive species, but few people understand the global scale of vectors and impacts. In contrast, ecologists are

Biological Control of Arthropods of Conservation Importance
Invasive species, and the associated development of a relatively new biological discipline broadly known as invasion biology, are a mainstream and widely recognized scientific endeavor. Parties interested in invasive species and their management, modes of infiltration, and impact represent widely disparate groups including: political officials, conservationists, ecologists, agricultural, silvic...
متن کاملInvasive plants have broader physiological niches.
Invasive species cost the global economy billions of dollars each year, but ecologists have struggled to predict the risk of an introduced species naturalizing and invading. Although carefully designed experiments are needed to fully elucidate what makes some species invasive, much can be learned from unintentional experiments involving the introduction of species beyond their native ranges. He...
متن کاملUnderstanding the long-term effects of species invasions.
We describe here the ecological and evolutionary processes that modulate the effects of invasive species over time, and argue that such processes are so widespread and important that ecologists should adopt a long-term perspective on the effects of invasive species. These processes (including evolution, shifts in species composition, accumulation of materials and interactions with abiotic varia...
متن کاملImpact of cyber-invasive species on a large ecological network
As impacts of introduced species cascade through trophic levels, they can cause indirect and counter-intuitive effects. To investigate the impact of invasive species at a network level, we use a generalized food web model, capable of propagating changes through networks with a series of ecologically realistic criteria. Using data from a small British offshore island, we quantify the impacts of ...

Environmental hazards include all kinds of hazards in the environment such as natural and technological or natural and man-made. The natural phenomena such as rains or floods are the normal behaviors of the nature which only when they cause damage to the human life, are considered as hazard. The technological events such as road accidents, air pollution and chemical pesticides are always danger...
