Pheromone Signaling: A Pissing Contest in Tilapia
نویسندگان
چکیده
In many species, males produce elaborate signals used by females in the evaluation of potential mates. Two urinary steroid epimers have now been shown to be components of a courtship display by male Mozambique tilapia that promotes female maturation.

Olfactory sensitivity to steroid glucuronates in Mozambique tilapia suggests two distinct and specific receptors for pheromone detection.
Cichlids offer an exciting opportunity to understand vertebrate speciation; chemical communication could be one of the drivers of African cichlid radiation. Chemical signals mediate key aspects in the lives of vertebrates and often are species specific. Dominant male Mozambique tilapia [Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters 1852)] release a sex pheromone, 5β-pregnan-3α,17α,20β-triol 3-glucuronate and...
متن کاملIdentity of a Tilapia Pheromone Released by Dominant Males that Primes Females for Reproduction
Knowledge of the chemical identity and role of urinary pheromones in fish is scarce, yet it is necessary in order to understand the integration of multiple senses in adaptive responses and the evolution of chemical communication [1]. In nature, Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) males form hierarchies, and females mate preferentially with dominant territorial males, which they visit i...
متن کاملSignatures of selection in tilapia revealed by whole genome resequencing
Natural selection and selective breeding for genetic improvement have left detectable signatures within the genome of a species. Identification of selection signatures is important in evolutionary biology and for detecting genes that facilitate to accelerate genetic improvement. However, selection signatures, including artificial selection and natural selection, have only been identified at the...
متن کاملEstimation of ammonia excretion rates during a period of red tilapia, Oreochromis sp. Culture, considering biomass increase in a water recirculating system
A completely randomized experimental design was conducted to estimate ammonia excretion rate by red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) during different stages of its growth in recirculating water system units typically designed to meet the experiment purposes. Eight weight groups each containing 75individuals of 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, 120, 180 and 200g average weight were considered as treatments in duplic...
متن کاملTranscriptome comparison reveals a genetic network regulating the lower temperature limit in fish
Transcriptional plasticity is a major driver of phenotypic differences between species. The lower temperature limit (LTL), namely the lower end of survival temperature, is an important trait delimiting the geographical distribution of a species, however, the genetic mechanisms are poorly understood. We investigated the inter-species transcriptional diversification in cold responses between zebr...
