Kalman filter data assimilation: targeting observations and parameter estimation.

چکیده
This paper studies the effect of targeted observations on state and parameter estimates determined with Kalman filter data assimilation (DA) techniques. We first provide an analytical result demonstrating that targeting observations within the Kalman filter for a linear model can significantly reduce state estimation error as opposed to fixed or randomly located observations. We next conduct observing system simulation experiments for a chaotic model of meteorological interest, where we demonstrate that the local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LETKF) with targeted observations based on largest ensemble variance is skillful in providing more accurate state estimates than the LETKF with randomly located observations. Additionally, we find that a hybrid ensemble Kalman filter parameter estimation method accurately updates model parameters within the targeted observation context to further improve state estimation.

Evaluation of Model Parameter Convergence when Using Data Assimilation for Soil Moisture Estimation
Data assimilation (DA) methods are commonly used for finding a compromise between imperfect observations and uncertain model predictions. The estimation of model states and parameters has been widely recognized, but the convergence of estimated parameters has not been thoroughly investigated. The distribution of model state and parameter values is closely linked to convergence, which in turn im...
متن کاملData Assimilation for a Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Model. Part II: Parameter Estimation
The parameter estimation problem for the coupled ocean-atmosphere system in the Tropical Pacific is investigated using an advanced sequential estimator, the extended Kalman filter (EKF). The intermediate coupled model (ICM) used in this paper consists of a prognostic upper-ocean model and a diagnostic atmospheric model. Model errors arise from the uncertainty in atmospheric wind stress. First, ...
متن کاملSimultaneous Estimation of Microphysical Parameters and Atmospheric State using Simulated Polarimetric Radar Data and Ensemble Kalman Filter in the Presence of Observation Operator Error
The impact of polarimetric radar data on the estimation of uncertain microphysical parameters is investigated when the effect of uncertain parameters on the observation operators is also considered. Five fundamental microphysical parameters, i.e., the intercept parameters of rain, snow and hail and the bulk densities of snow and hail, are estimated individually or collectively using the ensembl...
متن کاملJoint state and parameter estimation with an iterative ensemble Kalman smoother
Both ensemble filtering and variational data assimilation methods have proven useful in the joint estimation of state variables and parameters of geophysical models. Yet, their respective benefits and drawbacks in this task are distinct. An ensemble variational method, known as the iterative ensemble Kalman smoother (IEnKS) has recently been introduced. It is based on an adjoint model-free vari...
متن کاملData Assimilation in Structural Dynamics: Extended-, Ensemble Kalman and Particle Filters
Combined state and parameter estimation of dynamical systems plays a crucial role in extracting system response from noisy measurements. A wide variety of methods have been developed to deal with the joint state-parameter estimation of nonlinear dynamical systems. The Extended Kalman Filter method is a popular approach for the joint systemparameter estimation of nonlinear systems. This method c...
