Restarting activity in radio galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present observations of two radio galaxies, J1835+620 and 3C338, both with signs of having passed through different stages of core activity. The former presents two symmetric and bright components within a typical FR II structure, possibly resulting from two distinct phases of activity; the latter is a FR I radio galaxy with two separated regions with different age properties, possibly due to a switch-off and -on cycle in its core. In both sources, the optical counterpart lies in a group of galaxies with indications of mutual interaction, a scenario often invoked to explain triggering of core activity.

A search for molecular gas in restarting radio galaxies
Several radio galaxies are known that show radio morphological signatures that are best interpreted as restarting of nuclear activity after a period of quiescence. The conditions surrounding the phenomenon of nuclear recurrence are not understood. In this paper we have attempted to address this question by examining the nuclear fuelling characteristics in a sample of restarting radio galaxies. ...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملRestarting activity in the giant radio galaxy J1835+620
We present radio and optical observations of the peculiar radio galaxy J1835+620, a member of a new sample of large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. Its optical counterpart is in a group of at least three galaxies and shows strong, narrow emission lines which allow us to measure its redshift as z = 0.518. The derived cosmological distance places J1835+620 among...
متن کاملDying Radio Galaxies in Clusters
We report the recent discovery of three ‘dying’ radio galaxies belonging to the Westerbork Northern Sky Survey minisurvey sample: WNB1734+6407, WNB1829+6911 and WNB1851+5707. These sources have been selected on the basis of their extremely steep broad-band radio spectra, which is a strong indication that these objects either belong to the rare class of dying radio galaxies or that we are observ...

In this paper we comment on the possibility for intermittent jet activity in quasar 3C 273 on different timescales. We propose, that striking morphology of the large-scale radio jet in this source, as well as the apparent lack of its counterpart on the opposite side of the active center, may be explained in a framework of a restarting jet model. In particular, we propose that 3C 273 radio sourc...
