The objective of this work was to develop a prototype for a pulse oximeter. Given the necessity, in most medical interventions, to monitorize Oxygen saturation in peripheral blood (SpO2) a pulse oximeter is highly necessary in any operating room or intensive care unit. The electronic device was built recurring mostly to Integrated Circuit (IC) and its control was performed via a programmed microcontroller, which communicated with the Personal Computer (PC) and the several peripherals, including the sensor itself. First, the device was built in a breadboard and afterwards a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) was designed. Both the signal processing and the graphical interface were performed via a set of tools implemented on the computer. A module to measure the carbon dioxide (CO2) in a similar principle as pulse oximetry was also attempted but its implementation failed.
