Probable levetiracetam-related serum alkaline phosphatase elevation

چکیده
BACKGROUND Levetiracetam (LEV) is an antiepileptic drug with a favorable tolerability and safety profile with little or no effect on liver function. CASE PRESENTATION Here, we reported an epileptic pediatric patient who developed a significant elevation in serum alkaline phosphatase level (ALP) during LEV monotherapy. Moreover, the serum ALP level was surprisingly decreased to normal after LEV discontinuation. The Naranjo Adverse Drug Reaction Probability Scale score was 6, indicating firstly LEV was a probable cause for the increased serum ALP. CONCLUSIONS Cautious usage and concerns of the LEV-associated potential ALP elevation should be considered when levetiracetam is prescribed to epilepsy patients, especially pediatric patients.

Histiocytosis X characterized by marked elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase and rapid destructive changes in the lung parenchyma.
A 23 yr old man was admitted suspected of having a liver disease because of marked elevation of the serum alkaline phosphatase. A biopsy of the liver was without cholestasis. A skin biopsy of a papule was compatible with eosinophilic granuloma. Over a few months the patient developed severe restrictive lung disease. The elevation of the serum alkaline phosphatase was probably due to diffuse bon...
متن کاملInduction of rat liver alkaline phosphatase: the mechanism of the serum elevation in bile duct obstruction.
Bile duct ligation in the rat leads to a rapid increase in hepatic and serum alkaline phosphatase activity. Within 12 hr after bile duct ligation, hepatic alkaline phosphatase has increased 7-fold and serum alkaline phosphatase activity 2(1/2)-fold. The elevation in the serum activity is completely due to an increase in an isozyme that appears to originate in the liver. This serum isozyme and l...
متن کاملA Case of Vitamin D Deficiency without Elevation of Serum Alkaline Phosphatase in a Carrier of Hypophosphatasia
Elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a screening marker for the diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency, which may fail to be diagnosed if serum ALP is not elevated. Here, we describe a case of vitamin D deficiency without elevation of serum ALP. A 1-year-old Japanese girl was referred to our hospital for the evaluation of genu varum. Her serum intact PTH level was elevated, while her serum A...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF ALUMINUM ON BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS RELATED TO BONE METABOLISM. A MODEL STUDY OF HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS
The influence of aluminum on some serum parameters related to bone metabolism has been investigated by daily administration of aluminum over different periods of time. Daily administration of aluminum (1 mg/kg BW) for 20 or 50 days elevated serum phosphorous concentration by 16 percent and had no significant effect on serum calcium level. When aluminum was injected as a complex with citric...
متن کاملElevation in Serum Concentration of Bone-Specific Alkaline Phosphatase without Elevation in Serum Creatinine Concentration Secondary to Adefovir Dipivoxil Therapy in Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection
Of 168 patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection-related liver disease, 20 patients who had received 100 mg of lamivudine plus 10 mg/day of adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) (ADV group) and 124 patients who had received 0.5 mg/day of entecavir or 100 mg/day of lamivudine (non-ADV group) for >1 year were enrolled. For comparative analyses, 19 well-matched pairs were obtained from the groups...
