Energy resilient solutions for Japan - a BECCS case study
نویسندگان
چکیده
The objective of this study is to analyze Japan’s BECCS potential. A technical assessment is used to support a policy discussion on the suitability of this mitigation tool for Japan. IIASA’s BeWhere Model is used to examine the technical potential of bioenergy including optimal locations and capacities of biomass plants. The plant locations are overlaid with a geological suitability map for carbon storage. Results indicate that there is a substantial potential for bioenergy production which could contribute to substituting emissions from fossil fuels. By further developing the renewable energy pathway, Japan could substantially add to a more resilient and domestic resources-based energy sector. There is limited potential for direct negative emissions from bioenergy, but some of the coastal regions appear suitable for carbon storage. A higher potential could be achieved through off-shore carbon storage and enhanced cross-border collaboration. © 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Inefficient power generation as an optimal route to negative emissions via BECCS?
Current ambitions to limit climate change to no more than 1.5 °C–2 °C by the end of the 21st century rely heavily on the availability of negative emissions technologies (NETs)—bioenergy with CO2 capture and storage (BECCS) and direct air capture in particular. In this context, these NETs are providing a specific service by removing CO2 from the atmosphere, and therefore investors would expect a...

Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is a negative-emissions technology that may play a crucial role in climate change mitigation. BECCS relies on the capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) following bioenergy production to remove and reliably sequester atmospheric CO2 Previous BECCS deployment assessments have largely overlooked the potential lack of spatial colocation ...

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) envisages the need for large-scale deployment of net-negative CO2 emissions technologies by mid-century to meet stringent climate mitigation goals and yield a net drawdown of atmospheric carbon. These CO2 removal technologies complement lowor zero-carbon energy technologies1,2. Industrial-scale sequestration of CO2 from bioenergy production —...

Growing global demand for energy, result in depletion of easily access source of fossil fuels. To fulfillment of this huge demand, oil and gas industry expanded to develop offshore oil and gas reservoirs in recent years, which made environmental management challenging. IRAN owns one of the biggest offshore gas reservoir in PERSIAN GULF with high geopolitical and financial importance. Along the ...

This article analyzes a strongly nonlinear oscillator with cubic and harmonic restoring force and proposes an efficient analytical technique based on the modified energy balance method (MEBM). The proposed method incorporates higher-order approximations. After applying the proposed MEBM, a set of complicated higher-order nonlinear algebraic equations are obtained.
