Oceanic heat transport onto the Amundsen Sea shelf through a submarine glacial trough

چکیده
[1] Glaciers which drain the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) into the Amundsen Sea are accelerating and thinning rapidly. These observations have been attributed to the regional oceanography whereby heat contained within Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) drives the basal melting of floating glaciers. On the basis of new data we calculate that 2.8 terra-Watts (10) of oceanic heat flow onto the continental shelf and toward the glaciers via a submarine glacial trough. This is enough to account for most of the basal melting in the entire region suggesting the ocean is supplying an excess of heat toward the Antarctic continent. Citation: Walker, D. P., M. A. Precise knowledge about the extent of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; c. 26.5-19 cal. ka BP) is important in order to 1) improve paleo-ice sheet reconstructions, 2) provide a robust empirical framework for calibrating paleo-ice sheet models, and 3) locate potential shelf refugia for Antarctic benthos during the last glacial period. However, reliable reconst...

Enhanced submarine melting of outlet glaciers has been identified as a plausible trigger for part of the accelerated mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet1–3, which at present accounts for about a quarter of global sea level rise4. However, our understanding of what controls the submarine melt rate is limited and largely informed by brief summer surveys in the fjords where glaciers terminate. ...

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) is the only remaining marine ice sheet from the last glacial period. The bed is primarily below sea level and slopes down from the coast to the interior. It has been hypothesized that the ice sheet may be susceptible to run-away grounding line retreat [Weertman, 1974] leading to rapid disintegration and sea level rise. Were the WAIS to completely melt, the wa...

[1] Salt release during sea ice formation in the Ross Sea coastal regions is regarded as a primary forcing for the regional generation of Antarctic Bottom Water. Passive microwave data from November 1978 through 2008 are used to examine the detailed seasonal and interannual characteristics of the sea ice cover of the Ross Sea and the adjacent Bellingshausen and Amundsen seas. For this period th...
