چکیده

An accurate knowledge of the mineralogy (chemical composition and crystal structure) of the silicate dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) is crucial for understanding its origin in evolved stars, the physical and chemical processing in the ISM, and its subsequent incorporation into protostellar nebulae, protoplanetary disks and cometary nuclei where it is subjected to further processing. While an appreciable fraction of silicate dust in evolved stars, in protoplanetary disks around pre-main sequence stars, in debris disks around main sequence stars, and in cometary nuclei is found to be in crystalline form, very recent infrared spectroscopic studies of the dust along the sightline toward the Galactic center source SgrA∗ placed an upper limit of ∼ 1.1% on the silicate crystalline fraction, well below the previous estimates of ∼ 5% or ∼ 60% derived from the observed 10μm absorption profile for the local ISM toward Cyg OB2 No.12. Since the sightline toward SgrA∗ contains molecular cloud materials as revealed by the detection of the 3.1 and 6.0μm water ice absorption features, we argue that by taking into account the presence of ice mantles on silicate cores, the upper limit on the degree of silicate crystallinity in the ISM is increased to ∼ 3–5%.

Crystallinity versus mass-loss rate in Asymptotic Giant Branch stars

Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) observations have shown that O-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars exhibit crystalline silicate features in their spectra only if their mass-loss rate is higher than a certain threshold value. Usually, this is interpreted as evidence that crystalline silicates are not present in the dust shells of low mass-loss rate objects. In this study, radiative transfe...

Trends in the adsorption and reactivity of hydrogen on magnesium silicate nanoclusters.

We study nanoclusters of Mg-rich olivine and pyroxene (having (MgO)6(SiO2)3 and (MgO)4(SiO2)4 compositions) with respect to their reactivity towards hydrogen atoms, using density functional calculations. Ultrasmall silicate particles are fundamental intermediates in cosmic dust grain formation and processing, and are thought to make up a significant mass fraction of the grain population. Due to...

On Ultrasmall Silicate Grains in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

The abundance of both amorphous and crystalline silicates in very small grains is limited by the fact that the 10 mm silicate emission feature is not detected in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). On the basis of the observed IR emission spectrum for the diffuse ISM, the observed ultraviolet extinction curve, and the 10 mm silicate absorption profile, we obtain upper limits on the abundance...

A unified model of interstellar dust

We have simultaneously modeled both the interstellar extinction and polarization (both linear and circular) on the basis of a trimodal dust model: large silicate core-organic refractory mantle dust particles; very small carbonaceous particles responsible for the hump extinction; and PAH’s responsible for the FUV extinction. The core-mantle particles which are the exclusive contributor to the in...

The 8–14 µm emission spectra of 12 T Tauri stars in the Taurus/Auriga dark clouds and in the TW Hydrae association obtained with the Infrared Spectro-graph (IRS 1) on board Spitzer are analyzed. Assuming the 10 µm features originate from silicate grains in the optically thin surface layers of T Tauri disks, the 8–14 µm dust emissivity for each object is derived from its Spitzer spectrum. The em...
