The Regeneration of Aspen Stands in Southern Utah

چکیده
research conducted at Utah State University that identified factors to improve the success of regenerating aspen in southern Utah. Evaluating past si lvicultural regeneration treatments indicated that the presence of pre-harvest advance reproduction, site preparation by broadcast burning, and decreasing browsing pressure could increase the quantity of aspen regeneration. The outcomes are generalized into an easy-to-use model, the Aspen Pyramid, to facilitate decision-making regarding regenerating aspen. The Regeneration of Aspen Stands in Southern Utah

Simulation of Quaking Aspen Potential Fire Behavior in Northern Utah, USA
Current understanding of aspen fire ecology in western North America includes the paradoxical characterization that aspen-dominated stands, although often regenerated following fire, are “fire-proof”. We tested this idea by predicting potential fire behavior across a gradient of aspen dominance in northern Utah using the Forest Vegetation Simulator and the Fire and Fuels Extension. The wind spe...
متن کاملAspen Decline , Aspen Chemistry , and Elk Herbivory : Are They Linked ?
A spen (Populus tremuloides) provides important habitat for mammals and birds 1–3 , improves water retention in watersheds, 4 and has high aesthetic appeal in autumn. However, the amount and quality of aspen cover in the West has been declining for many years. For example, aspen cover in the Dixie and Fishlake National forests in Utah has decreased by more than 60% from historic levels, and in ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Aspen Stand Structure and Composition in the Western U.S.: Implications for Management
Aspen communities in the western U.S. are considered at risk because of low levels of disturbance and high levels of herbivory by wild and domestic ungulates. There appears to be a trend toward the loss of aspen-dominated stands West-wide. In some cases the loss is caused by succession, with shade-tolerant conifers becoming dominant. On dry sites where aspen is considered to be the climax, dete...
متن کاملModel-based assessment of aspen responses to elk herbivory in Rocky Mountain National Park, USA.
In Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) has been observed to be declining on elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) winter range for many decades. To support elk management decisions, the SAVANNA ecosystem model was adapted to explore interactions between elk herbivory and aspen dynamics. The simulated probability of successful vegetative regeneration for senescent aspe...
متن کاملAspen Increase Soil Moisture, Nutrients, Organic Matter and Respiration in Rocky Mountain Forest Communities
Development and change in forest communities are strongly influenced by plant-soil interactions. The primary objective of this paper was to identify how forest soil characteristics vary along gradients of forest community composition in aspen-conifer forests to better understand the relationship between forest vegetation characteristics and soil processes. The study was conducted on the Fishlak...
