Vertical Motion of the Basin and Range, Western United States, from 10 Years of Campaign GPS
نویسنده
چکیده
An analysis of 10 years of campaign Global Positioning System (GPS) data collected in periodic surveys of the Basin and Range shows that vertical velocity measurement is less precise than horizontal measurements by approximately a factor of 3, and less precise than velocities from continuous GPS sites by a factor of 3-4. To obtain this level of precision, a method for conservatively quantifying uncertainties that takes into account the misfit of velocity data to a constant strain rate model is employed. This method results in a reduction of uncertainties by approximately a factor of 2. Uncertainties in position and velocity, for campaign and continuous sites are compared to results from other groups. Most of the vertical velocities in the Basin and Range are not resolvably different than zero, to 95% confidence. However, collecting sites into sub-networks of 10 sites indicates a marginally significant ~2 mm/yr of vertical motion between 114 ̊ west longitude (up) compared 119 ̊ west longitude (down). The greatest east/west tilting rates are 58.8±14.6 nanoradians per year eastward and 52.4±15.9 nanoradians per year westward on the flanks of an area of relative uplift near 114 ̊ west longitude.

Integration Scheme for SINS/GPS System Based on Vertical Channel Decomposition and In-Motion Alignment
Accurate alignment and vertical channel instability play an important role in the strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS), especially in the case that precise navigation has to be achieved over long periods of time. Due to poor initialization as well as the cumulative errors of low-cost inertial measurement units (IMUs), initial alignment is not sufficient to achieve required navigation ac...

[1] Contemporary deformation of the Yellowstone hot spot and surrounding western United States is analyzed using tectonic microplate modeling, employing constraints from GPS observations corrected for postseismic deformation of M7+ earthquakes, fault slip rates, and earthquake focal mechanisms. We focus primarily on the kinematics of the Yellowstone hot spot and the eastern Snake River Plain vo...
متن کاملNorthwest Basin and Range tectonic deformation observed with the Global Positioning System , 1999 – 2003
[1] We use geodetic velocities obtained with the Global Positioning System (GPS) to quantify tectonic deformation of the northwest Basin and Range province of the western United States. The results are based on GPS data collected in 1999 and 2003 across five new quasi-linear networks in northern Nevada, northeast California, and southeast Oregon. The velocities show 3 mm/yr westward movement of...
متن کاملGPS Imaging of vertical land motion in California and Nevada: Implications for Sierra Nevada uplift
We introduce Global Positioning System (GPS) Imaging, a new technique for robust estimation of the vertical velocity field of the Earth's surface, and apply it to the Sierra Nevada Mountain range in the western United States. Starting with vertical position time series from Global Positioning System (GPS) stations, we first estimate vertical velocities using the MIDAS robust trend estimator, wh...
