چکیده

The present study shows how the direct Gibbs free energy minimization technique is sometimes superior to the reaction coordinates—equilibrium constants method when the thermodynamic analysis of complex systems is performed. In this respect, the above two methods are applied for two different processes to determine their equilibrium compositions: (1) the Haber process: a simple problem consisting of a single gasphase reaction where both methods are expected to give the same result and (2) steam-coal gasification process which ismore complex since it involves numerous reactions and solid-phase chemical species (i.e., coal or carbon). Thus, in the second case the reaction coordinates—equilibrium constants method fails to provide correct predictions of the equilibrium composition. In addition, the authors give the optimum conditions for the two processes: high pressure for Haber process and high temperature for steam-coal gasification in agreement with LeChatelier principle. In order to deal with deviation from the ideal-case assumption, the Peng–RobinsonEquation of State (PR EOS) is implemented for both techniques and both case studies. All computations and figures are generated using a single computer algebra, Mathematica. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Gasification under CO2–Steam Mixture: Kinetic Model Study Based on Shared Active Sites

In this work, char gasification of two coals (i.e., Shenfu bituminous coal and Zunyi anthracite) and a petroleum coke under a steam and CO2 mixture (steam/CO2 partial pressures, 0.025–0.075 MPa; total pressures, 0.100 MPa) and CO2/steam chemisorption of char samples were conducted in a Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA). Two conventional kinetic models exhibited difficulties in exactly fitting th...

Shell Gasifier-based Coal Igcc with Co2 Capture: Partial Water Quench vs. Novel Water-gas Shift

We provide a detailed thermodynamic and economic analysis of two novel alternatives to the “standard” Shell coal IGCC with CO2 capture. In the first, the syngas coolers are replaced by a “partial water quench” where the raw syngas stream is cooled and humidified via direct injection of hot water. This design is less costly, but also less efficient. The second approach retains syngas coolers but...

Clean Hydrogen Energy and Electric Power Production with CO2 Capturing by Using Coal Gasification

Clean hydrogen is the major energy carrier for power production. The conversion of CO to CO2 and zero emission during hydrogen energy production causes high capital cost. It is a matter of prestige to optimize the process in order to make zero emission and cost effective production of clean hydrogen energy and electric power. In this era, coal gasification is th...

Mathematical Modeling of Coal Gasification Processes in a Well- Stirred Reactor: Effects of Devolatilization and Moisture Content

The devolatilization process and the moisture content in coal and biomass play an important role on the gasification performance of these fuels. To theoretically understand the complex chemical processes in a gasifier, we developed a multiphysics model to simulate the gasification processes in a well-stirred reactor. This model is a first-of-its-kind: it considers detailed gas-phase chemistry, ...

Experimental Investigation of Chemically Activated Pine Wood Char Gasification at High Pressures Using Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy

Biomass and coal gasification is a rapidly developing technology due to the increasing global demand for fossil fuel resources. Gasification is the process of conversion of solid carbonaceous feedstock to a gas mixture containing CO and H2 in the presence of steam or carbon dioxide. Past research on coal gasification has shown that the process requires high temperatures (> 800 oC) and produces ...
