Multiple Sparganosis

چکیده
181 Dear Editor. The recent report by Yoon et al. [1] on multiple sparganosis is very interesting. Generally, sparganosis is a parasitic infestation of tissue that is sporadically reported from many countries around the world. Yoon et al. [1] reported a case with this problem and concluded that “the longevity of spargana could have been up to 45 years with a parasitic infection occurring in two sites following a change in the patient’s immune status”. The main clinical presentation of sparganosis is a mass [2]. In some cases, it can be asymptomatic and is found by accident from pathohistological examination of a surgical specimen [2]. For management of sparganosis, complete surgical excision has been recommended [2]. Surgical treatment is usually effective and pathohistological examination of the surgical specimens is usually the appropriate way to obtain a final confirmatory diagnosis [2]. However, a chance of recurrence has been observed, and thus careful postoperative surveillance is recommended. The longevity of spargana is worth noting. Up to the present, the exact lifespan of the parasite in humans has not been determined. In LETTER

Sparganosis of the breast is an uncommon disease, but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unusual and suspicious breast masses. A history of ingesting contaminated water and direct ingestion of snakes and frogs may help in differential diagnosis of the mass. Complete surgical removal is the treatment of choice and provides a definite diagnosis. We report a case of multiple axi...
متن کاملSparganosis of the Unilateral Breast: A Case Report
Sparganosis is a parasitic infection caused by the sparganum, the plercercoid of the genus Spirometra. The preoperative diagnosis of breast sparganosis is difficult in most cases because it is a rare parasitic infection less than 2% of all cases. We report a 62-year-old woman case of breast sparganosis that were confirmed by surgical removal of worms from the right breast. The radiologic images...

caused by the larval form of the pseudophyllidean tapeworm Spirometra (1). Humans are usually aberrant hosts (2). The route of infection is ingestion of raw meat of snakes or frogs, or drinking contaminated water (2). The clinical finding of sparganosis is the presence of subcutaneous masses in the abdominal wall, scrotum, lower extremities, chest wall, brain and breast (3). There are few case ...
متن کاملA Case of Sparganosis That Presented as a Recurrent Pericardial Effusion
Sparganosis is caused by a larval tapeworm of the genus Spirometra, which commonly invades subcutaneous tissue, but less frequently invades muscle, intestines, spinal cord, and the peritoneopleural cavity. The authors managed a female patient who presented with a recurrent pericardiopleural effusion and peripheral eosinophilia. The anti-sparganum-specific IgG serum level was significantly highe...
متن کاملScrotal Sparganosis Mimicking Scrotal Teratoma in an Infant: A Case Report and Literature Review
Sparganosis is an infection with a parasitic tapeworm larva that occurs by eating infected foods or drinking contaminated water. The larvae can migrate to a tissue or muscle in the chest, abdominal wall, extremities, eyes, brain, urinary tract, pleura, pericardium, spinal canal, or scrotum. Herein, we report a 5-month old infant with scrotal sparganosis who was initially suspected to have a scr...
