چکیده

Several parameters of return-stroke current waveforms of triggered lightning are discussed and compared to results obtained in other places. The parameters presented in this paper, obtained for the first time in Brazil, are crucial in the lightning protection research. All these measurements were done with a sample rate of 100 ns, enabling us to study rise and decay times of the waveforms. Images from a high-speed camera were also used in this work. The triggered lightning, artificially initiated by the “classical” and the “altitude” techniques, were performed during the summer of 2001 and 2002 at International Center for Triggered and Natural Lightning in Brazil (Cachoeira Paulista, S 22°41.2; W 44°59.0; altitude: 625 m). Most triggered lightning strokes in this study have uncommonly higher peak current intensities. These high peak current values were confirmed by the registered magnetic field in the magnetic cards. Also the average duration of the strokes were shorter than usually reported in literature. Measurements of current and light intensity are also compared in order to find a relationship between them.

Characteristics of Lightning Discharges and Electric Structure of Thunderstorm

Progresses in the research on physical processes of lightning discharge and electric structure of thunderstorm in the last decade in China have been reviewed. By using the self-developed lightning detecting and locating techniques with high temporal and spatial resolution, the characteristics and parameters of lightning discharge in some representative areas in China have been obtained. A ground level gamma-ray burst observed in association with rocket-triggered lightning

[1] We report the observation of an intense gamma-ray burst observed on the ground at sea level, produced in association with the initial-stage of rocket-triggered lightning at the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing at Camp Blanding, FL. The burst was observed simultaneously on three NaI(Tl)/photomultiplier tube detectors that were located 650 m from the triggered lightning...

Initial stage in lightning initiated from tall objects and in rocket- triggered lightning

[1] We examine the characteristics of the initial stage (IS) in object-initiated lightning derived from current measurements on the Gaisberg tower (100 m, Austria), the Peissenberg tower (160 m, Germany), and the Fukui chimney (200 m, Japan) and their counterparts in rocket-triggered lightning in Florida. All lightning events analyzed here effectively transported negative charge to ground. For ...

Characterization of Pulses Superimposed on the Initial Continuous Current of Upward Lightning

We compare the characteristics of initial continuous current pulses (ICC pulses) in natural upward lightning as observed on the Gaisberg tower (100 m), the Peissenberg tower (160 m), and the Fukui chimney (200 m) with their counterparts in rocket-triggered lightning in Florida. All lightning events analyzed here effectively transported negative charge to ground. The geometric mean (GM) values o...

Measurements of x-ray emission from rocket-triggered lightning

[1] We report measurements of the x-ray emission from rocket-triggered lightning, made during the summer of 2003, using four instruments placed between 15 and 40 m from the lightning channels. X-rays were measured 0–80 ms just prior to and at the beginning of 73% of the 26 return strokes observed. The emission was composed of multiple, very brief bursts of x-rays in the 30–250 keV range, with e...
