The CMU TransTac 2007 Eyes-free and Hands-free Two-way Speech-to-Speech Translation System

چکیده
The paper describes our portable two-way speech-tospeech translation system using a completely eyesfree/hands-free user interface. This system translates between the language pair English and Iraqi Arabic as well as between English and Farsi, and was built within the framework of the DARPA TransTac program. The Farsi language support was developed within a 90-day period, testing our ability to rapidly support new languages. The paper gives an overview of the system’s components along with the individual component objective measures and a discussion of issues relevant for the overall usage of the system. We found that usability, flexibility, and robustness serve as severe constraints on system architecture and design.

Iraqcomm: a next generation translation system
This paper describes the IraqComm translation system developed by SRI International, with components from Language Weaver, Inc., and Cepstral, LLC. IraqComm, supported by the DARPA Translation Systems for Tactical Use (TRANSTAC) program, mediates and translates spontaneous conversations between an English speaker and a speaker of colloquial Iraqi Arabic. It is trained to handle topics of tactic...
متن کاملIraqComm and FlexTrans: A Speech Translation System and Flexible Framework
SRI International's IraqComm system performs bidirectional speech-to-speech machine translation between English and Iraqi Arabic in the domains of force protection, municipal and medical services, and training. The system was developed primarily under DARPA's TRANSTAC Program and includes: speech recognition components using SRI's Dynaspeak engine; MT components using SRI's Gemini and SRInte...
متن کاملIncremental Adaptation of Speech-to-Speech Translation
In building practical two-way speech-to-speech translation systems the end user will always wish to use the system in an environment different from the original training data. As with all speech systems, it is important to allow the system to adapt to the actual usage situations. This paper investigates how a speech-to-speech translation system can adapt day-to-day from collected data on day on...
متن کاملPerformance Assessments of Two-Way, Free-Form, Speech-to-Speech Translation Systems for Tactical Use
A critical challenge for military personnel when operating in foreign countries is effective communication with the local population. To address this issue, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) created the Spoken Language Communication and Translation Systems for Tactical Use (TRANSTAC) program. The program’s goal is to develop speech-tospeech translation technologies enabling ...
متن کاملLanguage identification for speech-to-speech translation
This paper investigates the use of language identification (LID) in real-time speech-to-speech translation systems. We propose a framework that incorporates LID capability into a speech-to-speech translation system while minimizing the impact on the system’s real-time performance. We compared two phone-based LID approaches, namely PRLM and PPRLM, to a proposed extended approach based on Conditi...
