چکیده

For almost 350 years it was known that 1729 is the smallest integer which can be expressed as the sum of two positive cubes in two different ways. Motivated by a famous story involving Hardy and Ramanujan, a class of numbers called Taxicab Numbers has been defined: Taxicab(k, j, n) is the smallest number which can be expressed as the sum of j kth powers in n different ways. So, Taxicab(3, 2, 2) = 1729; Taxicab(4, 2, 2) = 635318657. Computing Taxicab Numbers is challenging and interesting, both from mathematical and programming points of view. The exact value of Taxicab(6) = Taxicab(3, 2, 6) is not known; however, recent results announced by Rathbun [R2002] show that Taxicab(6) is in the interval [10, 24153319581254312065344]. In this note we show that with probability greater than 99%, Taxicab(6) = 24153319581254312065344.

What Is the Value of Taxicab(6)? An Update

The famous story of the number 1729, the smallest integer which can be expressed as the sum of two positive cubes in two different ways, motivated the introduction of Taxicab Numbers. The smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in n different ways is called Taxicab(n). So, Taxicab(2) = 1729. Further on, Taxicab(5) = 48988659276962496. Computing Taxicab(n) is challenging and interest...

A TAXICAB VERSION OF A TRIANGLE' S APOLLONIUS CIRCLE

One of the most famous problems of classical geometry is the Apollonius' problem asks construction of a circle which is tangent to three given objects. These objects are usually taken as points, lines, and circles. This well known problem was posed by Apollonius of Perga ( about 262 - 190 B.C.) who was a Greek mathematician known as the great geometer of ancient times after Euclid and Archimede...

P-value: What is and what is not

The misinterpretation and misuse of p-value have been increasing for decades. In March 2016, the American Statistical Association released a statement to warn about the use and interpretation of p-value. In this study, we provided a definition and discussion of p-value and emphasized the importance of its accurate interpretation.

Mistaking the Map for the Territory: What Society Does With Medicine; Comment on “Medicalisation and Overdiagnosis: What Society Does to Medicine”

Van Dijk et al describe how society’s influence on medicine drives both medicalisation and overdiagnosis, and allege that a major political and ethical concern regarding our increasingly interpreting the world through a biomedical lens is that it serves to individualise and depoliticize social problems. I argue that for medicalisation to serve this purpose, it would have to exclude the possibil...

Intrinsic Value: Towards A Pragmatic Theory

Intrinsic value is a concept central to the environmentalist movement. Whether one believes that natural objects have intrinsic value is supposed to determine whether one takes a ecocentric or homocentric approach to environmentalism, whether we practice deep or (merely) shallow ecology.  Yet this concept is also a center of controversy and confusion.  Just what does it mean for something to ha...
