On Hurst exponent estimation under heavy-tailed distributions

چکیده
In this paper, we show how the sampling properties of Hurst exponent methods of estimation change with the presence of heavy tails. We run extensive Monte Carlo simulations to find out how rescaled range analysis (R/S), multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF − DFA), detrending moving average (DMA) and generalized Hurst exponent approach (GHE) estimate Hurst exponent on independent series with different heavy tails. For this purpose, we generate independent random series from stable distribution with stability exponent α changing from 1.1 (heaviest tails) to 2 (Gaussian normal distribution) and we estimate Hurst exponent using the different methods. R/S and GHE prove to be robust to heavy tails in the underlying process. GHE provides the lowest variance and bias in comparison to the other methods regardless the presence of heavy tails in data and sample size. Utilizing this result, we apply a novel approach of intraday time-dependent Hurst exponent and we estimate Hurst exponent on high frequency data for each trading day separately. We obtain Hurst exponents for S&P500 index for the period beginning with year 1983 and ending by November 2009 and we discuss surprising result which uncovers how the market’s behavior changed over this long period.

Heavy-traffic limit for a feed-forward fluid model with heterogeneous heavy-tailed On/Off sources
We consider a multi-station fluid model with arrivals generated by a big number of non-homogeneous heavy-tailed On/Off sources. If the model is feedforward in the sense that fluid cannot flow from one station to other with lighter tail distributions, we prove that under heavy-traffic, the scaled workload converges in distribution to a reflected fractional Brownian motion process with multidimen...
متن کاملAccuracy and Computational Efficiency on the Fractal Traffic Generation
The use of synthetic self-similar traffic in computer networks simulation is of vital importance for the capturing and reproducing of actual Internet data traffic behavior. A commonly used technique for generating selfsimilar traffic is achieved by aggregating On/Off sources where the active (On) and idle (Off) periods exhibit heavy tailed distributions. This work analyzes the balance between a...
متن کاملAmbiguities in estimates of critical exponents for long-range dependent processes
In this article we show that the Hurst parameter and a well-known wavelet estimator fail to distinguish on/off models with substantially different distributions of on-times. We identify the problem as arising when standard power spectrum techniques, which are well-defined for commonly considered processes, are applied to processes with extremely heavy tailed on-times. We provide an elementary m...
متن کاملThe Effect of the Underlying Distribution in Hurst Exponent Estimation
In this paper, a heavy-tailed distribution approach is considered in order to explore the behavior of actual financial time series. We show that this kind of distribution allows to properly fit the empirical distribution of the stocks from S&P500 index. In addition to that, we explain in detail why the underlying distribution of the random process under study should be taken into account before...
متن کاملOn Long-range-dependence Synthetic Data Generation through Heavy-tailed Distributions
Comprehensive analysis of the Internet traffic conducted over the last decade revealed the concept of longrange dependence (LRD) in the collected data traces. Some of this analysis work proved that this property is a result of the heavy tailed distribution of the packet inter-arrival time, which is a result of the heavy tailed distribution of packet size of the traffic sources. In this paper, w...
