چکیده

It has recently been demonstrated in this laboratory (l-3) that “biologically labile” methyl groups can be oxidized to CO2 in the rat. This has been established by feeding methionine containing radioactive carbon in the methyl group and demonstrating the presence of radioactive CO2 in the expired air. In the present communication a comparison is made of the rates of oxidation of methyl groups administered ss choline, betaine, dimethylthetin (4), and dimethyl-&propiothetin (5). These compounds, labeled with Cl4 in one methyl group, have been prepared and injected intraperitoneally into rats. The radioactivity of the CO2 in the expired air was measured at intervals during a 24 hour period.

Oxidation of choline-like substances by rat liver preparations; inhibitors of choline oxidase.

The work of Moyer and du Vigneaud (1) has demonstrated that, of a considerable number of compounds related to choline, choline itself, betaine, its sulfur analogue dimethylthetin, and the dimethylethyl analogue of choline, i.e. dimethylethyl-P-hydroxyethylammonium chloride, are the only ones which will permit rat growth on a methionine-free homocystinecontaining diet. Subsequent work by Dubnoff...

Byerrum Et Al-betaine as a Methyl Donor

methvlation can occur. It was found that after feeding choline-methyl-C14 to plants, radioactive betaine and dimethylglycine had been produced. Choline could give rise to betaine either by transferring its methyl groups to glycine, or some methylated glycine, to yield betaine, or oxidation of choline to betaine could occur. The experiments of Cromwell and Rennie (5) and of Bregoff and Delwiche ...

Dimethylthetin can substitute for glycine betaine as an osmoprotectant molecule for Escherichia coli.

Glycine betaine is believed to be the most active naturally occurring osmoprotectant molecule for Escherichia coli and other bacteria. It is a dipolar ion possessing a quaternary ammonimum group and a carboxylic acid group. To examine the molecular requirements for osmoprotective activity, dimethylthetin was compared with glycine betaine. Dimethylthetin is identical to glycine betaine except fo...

[Methyl-14C]-choline incorporation into nude mice bearing tumor xenografts-correlation with [methyl-3H]-thymidine: A pilot study

Background: Many in vitro studies suggested that choline incorporation into many types of tumors is related to cell proliferation. Whether in vivo choline incorporation is related also to cell proliferation or not was my question. Therefore, the aim of this pilot study was to investigate the relationship of in vivo [methyl- 14C]-choline incorporation and in vivo [methyl-3H]- thymidine incorpora...

Comparative genomics and mutagenesis analyses of choline metabolism in the marine R oseobacter clade

Choline is ubiquitous in marine eukaryotes and appears to be widely distributed in surface marine waters; however, its metabolism by marine bacteria is poorly understood. Here, using comparative genomics and molecular genetic approaches, we reveal that the capacity for choline catabolism is widespread in marine heterotrophs of the marine Roseobacter clade (MRC). Using the model bacterium Rueger...
