Facial dynamics reveals person identity and communicative intent, regulates person perception and social interaction

چکیده

In both biometrics and facial expression recognition, previous literature emphasizes the configuration of facial features instead of their dynamics. I propose that dynamics provide essential information about person identity, neural control, communicative intent, and interpersonal coordination. To investigate this hypothesis, my colleagues and I have used multiple methods, including perceptual judgment, manual annotation of facial actions, and automatic facial image analysis and synthesis. My talk will review our findings in support of this hypothesis, including our use of real-time avatars and expression cloning to separate the joint influence of appearance and dynamics. We show that the dynamics of facial action are critical to individual differences in perception and expression of emotion and pain, communicative intent, person perception, and social interaction. I also review our related findings for vocal expression. In all, this work highlights the importance of dynamics to a broad range of intraand interpersonal functions.

Why Do They Have to Flaunt it? Perceptions of Communicative Intent Predict Antigay Prejudice Based Upon Brief Exposure to Nonverbal Cues

Perceivers use gender-atypical nonverbal cues to categorize others as lesbian/gay, and the same cues help to explain the occurrence of antigay prejudice. Although these patterns replicate across recent studies, their proximal causes have received little attention. It remains unclear, for example, why the gender-atypical appearances common among sexual minority individuals arouse negative evalua...

Interactive brains, social minds.

To reveal the neural and behavioral dynamics of social interaction, single-person studies are increasingly complemented by research designs that simultaneously assess two or more interacting individuals. In this article, we review studies on neural mechanisms and markers of social interactions that use multi-person functional magnetic resonance imaging and electrophysiological recordings. We pr...

Lipsmacking Imitation Skill in Newborn Macaques Is Predictive of Social Partner Discrimination

Newborn rhesus macaques imitate facial gestures even after a delay, revealing the flexible nature of their early communicative exchanges. In the present study we examined whether newborn macaques are also sensitive to the identities of the social partners with whom they are interacting. We measured infant monkeys' (n = 90) lipsmacking and tongue protrusion gestures in a face-to-face interaction...

11 An integrative approach towards understanding the psychological and neural basis of congenital prosopagnosia

Faces have distinctive evolutionary and social significance and, therefore, it is not surprising that face perception is probably the most developed visual perceptual skill in humans. At an input level, faces are perceptually similar homogeneous exemplars drawn from a single class and are all composed of essentially the same local elements (e.g., two eyes, a nose, cheeks and a mouth) in the sam...

The Psychology and Neuroscience of Person Perception

Understanding other people is an important and consequential task, and it is thus not surprising that the perceptual system is attuned to extract relevant information (e.g. social categories, identity, traits, and intentions) available in the faces, bodies, and voices of other people. As a result, social information is quickly inferred from even a brief glimpse of another’s face, although this ...
